Just had a random question jump into my head. I am currently looking for a dedicated server to host websites. But I also play some computer games. Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Etc. So I was wondering how much bandwidth would be needed two run 1 of each server with like 16 people in each.
Well, my first point of advice on finding a box to dedicate to gaming is an old saying in the business... Ping Power Pipe
How much fun would you have on a gameserver with a ping of 250? Not alot. That's why network stability is the key. Find a host with a good network, ping some of their IPs, and download a few test files at different times during the day.
As for power, I've worked with more than my fair share of HLDS and SRCDS servers. I can run four Counter-Strike Source servers in a P4 2.66Ghz box with 512MB of RAM on a 10Mbps connection with absolutely no lag. So, as long as you stay above 2.4Ghz P4's or equivilent, you'll be fine.
Bandwidth can be a major issue, if you don't set your maxrates according to your available bandwidth. Three Counter-Strike Source servers on my box barely breaks the 300Kbps mark. If you go for an unmetered plan, keep it above 10Mbps, and if you go for a fixed-rate plan, make sure that the transfer is over 1TB (1000GB) on a 100Mbps burstable port.
Server security can become an issue if your server becomes too popular, so to speak. Valve Anti-Cheat will keep harmful hacks and cheats out of the game session, and apps such as APF or BFD can monitor and block intrusions. (Just be careful configuring them... I locked myself out of my server once. ^_^)
so basically dual xeon server can run around 8 cs server? how much bandwith do you use every month by running 4 cs server? and if i may know, where do you host your server? because I also want to look for dedicated server around northwest / west area. Also, is VPS can be use to run cs server? Thanks in advance

My box is hosted in the Hurricane Electric facility in Fremont, California, and it's hosted by BayColocation. (baycolocation.net) Right now their dedicated server department is splitting off to form JustDedicated.com, which has excellent prices, too. And yes, about 8 CS servers. One CS server usually takes up 16% of 512MB of RAM, so make sure you get at least a gig or more. As for bandwidth, I don't have monthly limits, I only have speed limits. 10Mbps is the limit on my connection, and I only use about 300Kbps with 3 servers, so you're definitely in the clear, bandwidth-wise, no matter what company you host with.
I have a CS:CZ server running on a celeron 2.4, 1GB (24 slot public) and I have yet to have any problems with it as well. I tis not the most popular server, but does fill up for a few hours at a time. There is also a small clan private server on the same machine.
