Sounds like you have had some bad experiences. Sorry to hear that.

What sort of hosting are you looking for and make sure your budget is adequate to find a solid host.

It looks like you just have run into some bad hosts. There are plenty of good ones out there, and I'm sure you'll be able to find what you are looking for.

What budget are you looking at?

I'm looking for a host that I can just host personal things on - I want PHP, SSH, MySQL, but nothing fancy in the way of bandwidth or huge space.

I've already wasted $13 on these idiotic scams.

SSH is something not everyone will provide, or has to be requested and verified.

What sort of space do you need? It varies a great deal for each persons idea of "nothing huge".

You can find what you want at about $3-7 a month from a reputable host.

Site5.com seems to be pretty popular now, although they are a tad more expensive.

Just do thorough research on any potential you have on your list.
One thing you may encounter a problem with is SSH.
Alot of hosts do not offer it. Most control panels are able to efficiently handle sites without the need for ssh.

We have people that will only check their e-mail via PINE, for one example.

Here's another tip: beware of hosts who post to threads like this with their sincerest condolences in order to get their signatures seen.

Most of the reliable hosting companies are more expensive

Humm I will agree with that to a point but there are some of us here that dont cater to a WHT crowd at all. We dont live at the forum or rely on a sole client base from here, so to add to your tip the individual must do as much research on the host as possible. It doesnt take a genius mentality to seperate hosts that come here for one reason only.

And don't feed the trolls who criticize people for having a genuine concern for people who had bad experiences.

Unfortunately, your statement about people who are "genuinely concerned" applies to a very, very small percentage of people - specifically hosts - here. You've been here long enough to be aware of that. You've also been here long enough to know that some hosts only post in threads like this in order to get their signatures seen. If WHT banned signatures tomorrow, a lot of these "so sorry" posts would vanish.
