I have a reseller account right now, which is fine but I would like to have greater control over some things, namely root access. I am pretty good with Linux administration, but I am a little concerned that not having physical access to a VPS server could be risky. What happens if it gets hacked and needs single user mode? Or worse, a total wipe and reinstall?
I am paying less than $15 now for my reseller account. I see that PowerVPS has accounts starting at $25, but I don't need all the disk space they are offering. Half a gig would be more than enough. Are there any GOOD companies offering lower priced plans? The site I want to move to a VPS is my email server - which basically runs incoming email aliases through a custom script before finally forwarding them. It just needs CPU time and RAM, not much in terms of storage.

Entrepreneurial,
With a VPS it is actually easier to to wipe/reinstall and most providers won't have an issue with it if something is exploited, there really isn't a need for single-user-mode due to the way it works entirely.
It is much easier to deal with than with a dedicated server - and faster to reimage a VPS if something is exploited.

The thing with lower price VPS plans is they are out there but they are unmanaged and normally don't include a control panel

What does unmanaged mean?

Means that if something breaks, you need to have the skills to fix it.

I suspect a lot of companies would help you fix problems even though it is un-managed, they are just not responsible to maintain it, that is your responsibility.... but you shouldn't get left hanging if you have a problem.

Xen has a feature for getting "console access" to a VPS.
Unixshell's control panel has the ability to "turn on" single-user mode, if you need to do that.

This has to be one of the greatest features around. Especially for those who are sys admins and aren't interested in a flashy web interface

I got a XEN account. With XEN you get "console" access. I can even see the boot up messages of my VPS.

Gilbert,
It's personally why I'm considering moving all my own servers to VPS - everything seems more manageable even though you're on a 'virtual' scale but still have complete control.
That and pricing.. VPS is where it is at!

Also Linode gives the same console access. They are doing a Xen beta test now but UML is stable.
