VPN=Virtual Private Network

You would use a VPN in a couple of different scenarios:

1. Providing roaming users with secure/encrypted access to a corprate network.
2. Providing two corprate sites secure connections over the public internet.

VPNs are used to connect networks securely over the internet. There are tons of different enycryption schemes available, and tons of vendors that offer solutions. Check out http://www.openvpn.net/ for a good free solution.

I use a VPN connection to connect to my home network from work and visa versa. Microsoft actually provides options for this in all server versions of Windows and VPN "clients" for all client versions of Windows. When I was younger, I used to play PC games that were only designed to be multiplayer LAN only.. over the net by using a VPN.
