determining my needs from a hosting provider.

I am running an e-commerce site with x-cart. It's a relatively small site: with 1000 items the database/html/php/images take up less than 60mb. However x-cart seems to use a fair amount of cpu. Even though my site appears to fit well into the <$10/mo plans, is this a bad way to go?

Thanks for any input,
___

Dan,

That all depends on the host itself.
Be sure to let each provider know what you plan on using with their services.

Ask them what they do when a script is running and using too much cpu - i.e. do they immediately suspend, do they contact the user and work things out or do they go nuts and fling bananas around.

As long as you get all the details before making any final decisions - you should be good to go.

No need to fear budget hosting - but just be aware of what you're buying and paying for.

If you have had a problem with a host in the past for the script using too much CPU then chances are you are going to end up in the same place down the road.

My suggestion would be to go with a reliable VPS solution where you have a set amount of resources that can be used by your site without creating any issues for other sites on the same server which is what happens on a shared setup.

It all depends on the server also, if the host was not using a good spec server then the CPU load would be high. Try getting a host with a nice spec machine.

A nice spec machine will cost more, so the host will put more accounts on it. Usually it all evens out and the advantage of being on a powerful machine won't be that remarkable.

VPS seems to be an ideal solution in your case... it will give you dedicated resources.. though you might have to spend somewhere around $50 per month for a good VPS...

You must still consider trying contact host with all details.. maybe you can find a better option
