VPS Colo Review

I'm doing one of those reviews where I update it as the days/weeks/months go by. I haven't seen to many for VPS Colo, but...I might have missed a few.

April 1, 2005 (Around 7:51AM): Sent VPS Colo the order

April 1, 2005 (Around 11:37AM): Checked e-mail and order was recieved

April 1, 2005 (Around 3:23PM): Sent payment

April 1, 2005 (Around 4-5PM): VPS Ready

I'm not sure of the times, but I sent a few support tickets, 3 or 5 and they were answered very quickly within 10 minutes up to 2 hours. Very impressive so far. I'll update again once something big happens.

Fantastic! I know for sure they've cleared up most of the issues they had over the past few weeks since the company purchase and I'm excited about what they have coming next. :-)

Everything is good so far...

April 3 - Wanted centOS instead of Fedora so they reimaged

April 4 - BIND didn't work on centOS so they reimaged back to Fedora and installed RV Skin and Fantasico within an hour or less.

My VPS has been fine for a while, but recently I decided to install APF firewall among other applications. I ran into problems and I sent a few tickets to VPSColo. My problem was that APF wasn't able to boot because it couldn't load the IP Tables module. I asked for a kernel recompliation and IP Tables enabled since I'm a newbie to it. They said such a thing couldn't be done but when I told them that some members on WHT suggested it, they checked it out. They tested IP Tables and said it worked. I then tried a few more suggestions by WHT members and so far nothing has worked. They replied within 30 minutes to 2 hours, but it took around 11-16 hours when they forwarded the problem to Rus. He suggested something, I tried it out and it didn't work. I told him it didn't work and got no reply so far. I then sent another support ticket asking for them to try and install it for me. I am still trying it out myself, but this seems to be a tiny problem, as APF worked fine on my other VPSes/servers.

I am not really sure if stateful IP tables rules work with UML. It's a new feature in Virtuozzo, that much I know.

Oh, I see. Then you're probably right...but then I don't know how I can protect the server. Any other good firewalls out there? Or do they all need the IP Tables module?

I'm not an expert in VPS since I don't actually have my own (I do manage one). The better firewalls require IP tables as far as I know. PowerVPS use to have a special firewall they wrote (but it worked for UML) before Virtuozzo supported APF. They changed the ticket system now and so it's no longer there but PowerVPS might still have it somewhere. Try emailing them, even thought you aren't a customer, they may help you out. If not, then I suggest you request help from VPSColo.

Actually I have one of those beta Windows VPSes with them which I plan to buy when it comes out. I'll ask them though, thanks.

APF does work on UML. I've only just come on shift but if you do an /sbin/iptables -L -v you should see all the rulesset active. The errors are normally Red Herrings

Red Herrings? Well, I'm not sure if APF is running or not. It just tells me that the firewall will flush every 5 minutes when I start it up.

That's a setting in the configuration file, it's near the top and clearly says "disable me." Enjoy APF

I've been with VPSColo since March of 04, and I have nothing but great things to say about them. If you don't see what you need right off, send them an e-mail. I have always found them extremely helpful and friendly.

The data center in which vpscolo.com itself is hosted has been having network trouble over the last few hours which is why some people aren't mangaing to see the site
