Smoothing the edges of an image so they fade into the background colour?

Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this.

Please see this image:

http://www.bonerlisa.com/mona.jpg

How would I make the edges fade/blur into a black background colour? (in other words, rather than the edges being very different than a black colour, I'd like them to gradually fade to black.)

Thank you!

En

EDIT: I should mention I use Photoshop. Thank you.

Pun the black layer beneath the image , and use a large brush for the eraser tool , something like 200px Not very professional but it can look good if used right ...
