vps newbie questions

Hi,

As the topic suggests I'm relatively new with vps hosting. I'ld like to ask some questions and it'll be pretty nice if anyone can answer them for me.

When I get a vps with a webpanel like cpanel/directadmin/plesk, and I add a domain, how does the end user configure his outlook client?

Does his login name look like:
- user@domain.com OR
- user

I'm currently residing in singapore, and I'ld like to know which one of the more popular vps hosting companies have better connectivity to where I am. I tried powervps but it wasn't as fast as I thought, at least not to where I am. But their support is really really very fast though.

as far as i know it is:

for new accounts on all: USER
for more e-mailaddresses it is with cpanel: user+domain.com

on plesk/DA it is for extra e-mailadresses: user@domain.com

people may correct me if needed

Ok I got a reply from servint, they are just as fast and friendly!

Somehow, the test file/url I got loads much faster for some reason. Well I'm very satisfied with the speed and service

Oh yes, another question:

Does it really matter if I choose plesk or cpanel? I've used both of them before and I don't really see the advantages of having one over another though, any recommendations?

not really, it comes all down on personal preference and experiences

it's all up to you, do you prefer plesk > cpanel or the other way around yourself ?

cPanel is more widely used, has more features, and support wise you'll probably find it easier to find an expert if something goes wrong.

Plesk is a good panel however lacks quite a lot of features that CP has.

I hope it's okay to join in on this thread and ask some newbie questions. I am looking for my first VPS account and, based on all the glowing reviews I've read here, sent off some e-mails to the people at LiquidWeb, ServInt and PowerVPS trying to find out if their cheapest account would work for my needs. I basically tried to explain I had one domain that was sucking all my bandwidth and that it included a phpBB forum that has had, at the most so far, 41 uses online at the same time. The same domain has a self-built CMS that uses php and MySQL and gets about 25-30G of traffic a month. I also host some other domains that use WordPress, but usage on these is pretty low.

Both ServInt and PowerVPS replied essentially saying that yeah, the cheapest should work for you, if not, upgrade. (Which financially is not an option.) LiquidWeb replied that I needed a dedicated server. So, that leaves me wondering...is LiquidWeb trying to sell me more than I need just to get the bigger sale? Or are the other two trying to just "get me in" and then hope to upgrade me to a more expensive account later? Or all parties being as honest as possible since such things are hard to predict without benchmarking and a lot of stats.

It's so difficult choosing a new host. Like a lot of people, I've been burned in the past with empty promises. I've been very happy with my shared hosting account, but am simply outgrowing it. I believe they are a LiquidWeb reseller – which is what led me to investigate them. Investigating them led me here…

The cheapest package on PowerVPS will definitely be fine for you. I currently admin a VPS that has several websites (none are mine), one of which (a MySQL intensive site) for about two hours a day has at least 45 people on it plus I am sure the other ones have at least two people on each with 8 other sites. That VPS is using the first package for PowerVPS and the load stays at about 2.50% during that time. I think you'll be just fine if it's a peak for you because the peak for this VPS is about 100 people at the same time on that site and the load is about 4.50%.

If you go with a cpanel VPS with the uptodate cpanel installed then email setup for outlook is easy.

Once your user has set up the account on their domain they can click the "Auto configure" link which downloads a small registry key generated by cpanel. This is imported to the local pc's registry which adds the appropriate settings to outlook/outlook express.

I also noticed yesterday that cpanel now has wysiwygPRO editor built into it's file manager!

kenshinjeff -- hello, are you with ServInt? If so, I urge you to join the rest of us at the forums. I'm also pretty new to ServInt myself, and there's an abundance of information there. Make sure you take a look.
