John,

To replace the file try to use the WinXP Recovery Console.

Do you have the i386 dir on your local hard disk? If so do the following:

With Windows running, insert the Setup CD into your CD-ROM drive.

Start > Run > X:i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

I replaced the file with the one I found at http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/d...s.shtml?wininet and my whole iexplorer.exe was no longer working

Does anyone have a newer version?

Are you sure it's "iexplorer.exe" and not "iexplore.exe"? The former is a virus while the latter is Internet Explorer. Given everything you've posted you are correct that this is a Windows issue.
