I'm about to signup for a vps service, i'm looking at the entry level packages a from powervps and servint.
The reviews of both seem very good.
Things i like about Powervps - easy start setup for dns and security.
Things i dont like, 50gb less bandwidth and no intermediate package to jump to, to get more bandwidth easily.
Things i like about Servint - apparant very good forums (?), the extra 50gb b/w, more packages to progress through.
What are peoples views of either ?
Does anyone know if powervps have an internal forum for users to share info ?

I know first hand that they are both great companies. I use servint for vps and dedicated and can tell you that the level of support that you will recieve will amaze you as well as their great user forums. Either place will be good for you but I highly prefer Servint.

How much work is involved in getting a servint vps solution upto the level provided by the easystart offered by powervps, i.e hardening the server and sorting dns out ?
Are there step by step recommendation posts on the forum ?

If you are a novice stay away from servint! It is just not meant for novice users. If you don't know how to set up a firewall or what iptables are , you will need to find a better manged solution that will handle all your security stuff. Servint does not offer support for firewalls.

I've been with servint more almost 1 year now, really amazing. Just signup with powervps though. Let see if the review really reflect them :-)

servint does not support any firewalls
I think servint is using the older version of Virtuozzo .... becuase on the site it says they cant install the firewalls ect until they update to the newer version but they are waiting to make sure its stable. Powervps already has it so they are offering to install the following, Email the noc at servint (noc@servint.com) and ask them yourself. They will not support any firewall period! Your on your own.
on Powervps site it says they do all this for you, if it's true its a better option for a beginer. Otherwise you have to figure out how to install all this yourself.
Upgrade of php, using mod security and suexec, etc.
Seperate /tmp partition mounted with noexec and nosuid for added protection.

???
first off, any VPS is not suitable for a novice, as you will have to know how to do basic things.
but as far as saying that servint lacks in the managed hosting area, id have to say you are dead wrong.

well that depends on your definition of a novice and it varies greatly. Just as the definition of "managed" means diffrent things depending on who you are dealing with. There are some companies that will install a firewall for you , some wont. If you are a novice or should I say if you are not an expert your better off with as much help as you can get and since servint does not offer any firewall help, I would suggest you go with another option. Just my suggestion though from my experience with them they couldnt help me with any of the security of the box and yes I am not an expert, but I was lead to believe that they would help with that but when it came down to it, no help at all.

Started with Power VPS, account was setup in a couple hours ready to go... had no problems or stability issues and only minor tweaks to WHM were needed to suit my needs.
Power VPS all the way.

to be fair servint so far have supported anything Ive asked of them, can you currently install a tradition sense firewall? no, thats down to the version of virtuozzo, will servints noc tell you to sod off if you ask? hell no, theyll explain another method of protecting your machine and offer to install it for you.
I haven't used powervps, theyre probably a great company and I wouldnt say dont go with them, but the comments about servint are way off base. To say servint doesn't offer support for firewalls shows you haven't used servint.

I did ask servint some pre-sales questions and they were upfront about not supporting a firewall post configuration. But they did say they would install a firewall for me and help with iptables and tcpwrappers.
In the end i went with powervps, i'll post a review in a week or so once i've had time to try everything out, so far i'm very happy with powervps.
