Hello,
Im making a dedicated server for myself, but problem is im not particually sure how im meant to set this up as a web server.
I used to have server with managed.com until they shut me off. I can get my computer to display php webpages across the internet, BUT only using my IP address & port (i.e. http://000.000.000.000:1024/bleh)
How would i set up DNS and Name servers so i can point domain names onto the server? Windows XP System
OR
Linux Mandrake (but i would prefer for XP because im already familiar with the system)

im just trying to think of what i had on my linux server. Something like squirrelmail i thiink it was.. ? by the way am i likely to have to pay alot to get DNS and Name servers etc to get Domain names to display websites from my computer?
I heard from a friend id have to park my nameservers somewhere? Whats all that about?

Squirrelmail is a webmail client to only check mail. You need mail server software like sendmail or qmail. But thats for linux

do you think it would be easier for me to set the server up in linux?
I dont know much about linux system, but 1 thing that crossed my mind, was to install linux, then install WHM/CPanel
Then hopefully id be able to set up the server just like i did with my dedicated managed.com server?
But, i dont know if i would get errors because of different configurations.
Anyone got advice there?
- not sure if this would automatically sort my DNS, Nameserver & Mail server problems?

If your more comfortable with Windows then use Windows. Its just been awhile since I did anything on Windows. At this very moment im on Linux as my workstation. Simply decide what you want out of the server. Do you want to start a hosting business? Or this something for you to post your resume on? What type of system you plan to use it? If you have an old system then perhaps linux is the way to go.
Answer those will help answer your other questions

well im building it new. Motherboard will be "AMD 760MPX 2x Socket A ATX LAN" dual processor motherboard,
and ill use good memory
BUT....
i dont plan to put any particually nice graphics card in there. anything like a 64MB radeon 7000 (25 quid) one would be fine, because it wont be intended for gaming purposes.
Main purpose of the server would just be to display my websites, and manage my email.

Advice: Don't make your own server unless you're going to do colocation. Do NOT host it out of your house whatever you do, its just not that easy. If you build it, and then send it to a datacenter for colocation and pay them, then it should work out ok, but not doing it out of your house!

whats "colocation"
and when you say dont do it out my house..... you mean dont take my server outside house or what??
I want to set up a server in my bedroom, it would be on 24/7 and it would stay there. I know its not just that easy thats why im asking for advice on nameservers etc. By the way if what you mean is sending my physical server to a datacentre, then ermm no thanks, ill pass on that. I know its possible to run home webservers because a mate of mine has done it but i dont see him in person, so he cant really help me much
