You're on 1mbit or 1.5mbit?

Also, yes the upgrade should be free, 14th March is apparently the date.

HOWEVER, go to http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/e...tierMigration/ to do it NOW .

I didn't get upgraded automatically.. I just went through the ntl autoregister.net thing and upgraded instantly. It'll say something like Current Tier: 750kbps, you can upgrade to 2mbps tier for no extra charge. Then it'll reboot your modem remotely and you're all set.

You didn't get upgraded automatically because they aren't doing that until later this week.

Odd, I was told it was 14th March when I called NTL yesterday (I was trying to find out my username and password which i'd forgotten, so I could do the online upgrade). I guess the person on the phone was wrong, like they are so often!

Possibly, but I'd not even given any details before she told me that they were rolling out the upgrades from the 14th.

That was announced several months ago, that ~£25 "administration fee" but that came under fire and made them slightly less competitive with blueyonder etc. so they scrapped the fee, since after all, it was pointless.

I see a bandwidth cap coming on ...

NTL are starting to oversell their network big style, and I can't see them being able to offer unmetered easily anymore when users have the freedom of the speeds they're currently giving away.

Even in areas where the usage is relatively low, users are seeing degradation in speed (I know an NTL engineer). This is where DSL (in the UK) has its advantage, fixed contention

Bully: Just ring them. You don't even need to know your account number; simply tell them your postcode, current speed, address and name. They should upgrade it for you and then tell you to reboot your modem.

Dan: They already have a bandwidth cap . For 3mbit, I think it's 40GB per month, and 30GB per month for 2mbit, 20GB for 1mbit.

As for the degradation of speed, luckily the area I'm in it seems I'm the only one with NTL broadband! Incredibly lucky, I know! So essentially there's 10mbit free for me to use, unfortunately I can only use 3mbit! I can understand however, that the more affluent parts of UK may be experiencing degradation of speed.

I'm very disappointed with the broadband industry in UK though. It's so far behind Japan, USA and Sweden! We pay incredibly high prices; although competition in the market for broadband is increasing, the speeds aren't increasing significantly, mainly due to the lack of resources allocated to the industry. It's going to take a lot of investment, time and money to see a significant improvement in UK's broadband services.
