How much are you paying for car insurance?
Just out of curiosity, how much are you paying for car insurance?
Reason I ask, I want to estimate about how much I will be paying for car insurance as a new driver.
Please state your car, age, how long have you been driving, where you currently live, and of course how much you are paying. List prices in CAD (Canadian Currency) if possible.
I have taken Young Drivers of Canada which is a driving school for new drivers. It teaches collision free driving and it reduces your insurance rate by a somewhat a good percent, but not too sure about it.
I still don't know what car I will have but it won't be anything sporty. I know that the car type makes a huge impact on how much I will be paying. But let's just say I have a 1999/2000 Pontiac Sunfire. Once again, I just want to get an idea. Thanks.
Regards,
- Ed

Best thing to do is ring around some insurance companies for quote's as your insurance is likely to be different to anyone posting to these forums... No harm in getting some quotes...

You are going to get creamed by insurance. To get fully insured you are probably talking $4000+ on that kind of vehicle. Unless you are in BC or somewhere they have provincial insurance or however that works. Your best bet if possible is to have a family member own the car and put it under their name and just pay them to drive it. Otherwise it just is so expensive.

Also you may want to google "Car Insurance" and get a quote there, that will give you an idea. I did that a while back to see what insurance would be on one of the new 2005 Ford Mustang GT's and it was $8500 and I have been driving for 4 years with no accidents or tickets. Brutal I tell ya.

Car: Honda Civic, 2002
Age: 29
Driving for: 13 years
Yearly insurance: $1260 US
Tickets on record: 1
Here's an interesting story. When I was married, my insurance bill was $135/mo. for both of our cars combined.
When we dissolved the marriage, my insurance dropped to...drumroll please...$132/mo.! (it's $105/mo. now - a ticket dropped off my record)
I called the insurance company livid that I'd removed an entire car from the policy and the reduction was only three dollars. It made sense that I would no longer qualify for the multi-car discount, but there are other pieces to the equation. You get a reduction just for being married. And when you're married they will remove certain age threshholds from consideration too. So, my rate jumped because I was single, and then it jumped again because they had to factor in that I was less than 30 years of age, previously a non-factor.
Talk about nuts! So, I called around for quotes, and they were all pretty much the same. I have my last ticket coming off my record in May, I turn 30 in August, I'll be remarried in January, and we'll be adding another car to the policy. So I figure after all that, they'll be paying me to be insured with them

Car: Ford Thunderbird, 1995
Age: 25
Driving for: 9 years
Yearly insurance: $650 US
Tickets on record: 2 - but that was over 6 years ago - so its not counted (after 5 years).
We don't have full coverage - state minimum (with no collision). That's with my husband and I on the policy.

2005 Scion XB
2001 Nissan Sentra
Full Collision /w $500 deductible
100,000/300,000 Personal Injury
$1,2000/Yr
When I was 18 I had a 92 Thunderbird Supercoupe and a Mustang GT one of them was about $3,700/yr and the other was $4.200/yr but I had a lot of tickets.
Here in the US is goes on a 'STEP' system, you start at STEP 15 and I got all the way up to STEP 32 which is why mine was so night, now I am as STEP 10 and over 25 years old so it has dropped quite a bit.
A pontiac sunfire will probably be a pretty cheap insruance car, its not a 'sports car' by any means so I don't think you will have a problem..

'STEP' system? I've never heard of that before (and I'm from the US).
I probably have - just not by name.
I've never financed a car before, so I've never had to pay full coverage. That's a nice thing about paying for a car in full (most I've ever paid was the car I just bought $3200), you don't have a bank telling you that you have to have full coverage insurance

£1950 for third party only!!!
Age 18 Male. (Classed as high risk)
Vauxhall 1.4 litre 1995 model 5 door.
The UK sucks big time
No wonder so many people drive without insurance. I'd be alot better if I didn't pay all of this for insurance.

I pay $94 a month for Liability only. I'm sure it'll be going up since I got hosed by some cop on a power trip a month or so back. I fought it in court and won, but I'm sure since it's a "negative mark" it'll go up.

Car: Geo Metro
Age: 20 (turning 21 in July)
Driving for: 2 years going to be 3 years soon
Monthly Insurance: $130.00/mo (it was $100 but after hurricanes it seem to went up)
yearly insurance: $1560.00/year
It seems in my area that insurance goes up for everyone about ever 6 months to a year each time. Rarely does it drop.... I just hope when I turn 25 that my insurance will drop a lot! As for me being a safe driver? Yes I am.
Oh and this is only for Liability nothing else.

Thank you for all the information. I found this site by searching google ( http://www.kanetix.ca/) It gives you a free car insurance quote. I'll try that and keep you guys update in a second.
Also, what car would be a wise choice to buy (in general)so that insurance costs won't be so high?
Thanks
Ed

I haven't heard of it either and I'm a programmer at an insurance company.
But, no two companies will rate a policy exactly the same way. Shop around and remember that insurance prices are negotiable. My wife will occasionally call Geico and get a quote and then call Progressive and see if they'll beat the Geico price. If they will, she'll call Geico back and it's rinse/lather/repeat.
