Very very odd DNS Problem

Hello,

This problem started a few days ago - it was all working fine before that. This problem is happening to multiple sites on multiple servers, with seperate dns zones - so I think it may be a network problem.

This only happens with cablevisions dns servers... using verizons the problem does not happen.

The problem is, 50% of the time, Cablevision dns servers can resolve elitehosts.com or www.elitehosts.com, then 2 minutes later it times out, then 2 minutes later it works.... however a dnsreport report (http://dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport...elitehosts.com) shows that there is nothing wrong - and nothing has changed with our DNS records recently.

Again, this is only with cablevision - and only with websites that are hosted on our servers - other websites work fine. An example nslookup session is this:

> elitehosts.com
Server: dhcp64.srv.hcvlny.cv.net
Address: 167.206.3.151

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to dhcp64.srv.hcvlny.cv.net timed-out
> elitehosts.com
Server: dhcp64.srv.hcvlny.cv.net
Address: 167.206.3.151

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

*** Request to dhcp64.srv.hcvlny.cv.net timed-out
> elitehosts.com
Server: dhcp64.srv.hcvlny.cv.net
Address: 167.206.3.151

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: elitehosts.com
Address: 209.67.29.105

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

I have an Optimum Online connection just like you and I have the same exact problem. I called them up this morning and gave them my DNS configuration and a tracert to a site that I was having problems with. They told me to call them again if they have the same problem 2 days from now. I think this seems to be a problem with Cablevision's DNS servers.

Interesting... is anyone else having this problem? This confirms my original thought that it was CableVision (O.O) - switching to Verizon name servers solved the problem.

MaB, I am asked numerous friends who use this Cable service and they are having the exact same problem as me. This seems to be a network-wide issue. Do you think you can call and complain too? If you do, they might speed up the repair provided that many customers have called and complained.

I'm on the phone with them now ,they said its an issue they know about and are working to resolve it - the person I'm talking to said that they've known about it since this morning.

I guess the only thing to do now is wait for them to fix it...

Thanks for the confirmation

I've noticed this happening on CV's network for the last week or so.

hey guy's

till your network provider finds solution to this why don't you sync your DNS servers to root servers.
that would add little delay but you will get DNS querry resolved every time.
you can just roll back when its fixed.

I've setup my name servers to do recursive queries only to servers within my internal network at the datacenter - I'd rather not allow outside recursion. Until it is fixed, I will be using Verizon name servers (151.202.0.84 and 151.202.0.85)

I've changed my routers to use alternate CV DNS servers, and the speed seems to be better. I found these addresses from a thread about this problem on dslreports:

167.206.1.30
167.206.1.103

Hey guys if you goto DSLReports and goto the OptimumOnline forum someone suggested TreeWalk DNS. I recommend you get that program because it fixed all my problems.
