how to setup a testbed server in my computer?

Hi

Before I get my first dedicated server, I need to learn how to setup and maintain a linux server.
Is it possible to setup a testbed server in my computer to use for learning hoiw to do things?
What software do I need to install?
Can that be done in windows xp? or should I install linux first, in a separate partition?

I need to learn everything, because I'm getting a server from serverpronto, which means no support (unless you pay everytime).

I guess if you need to learn linux, best is to buy a system and learn at home.. not on a system which is remotely located on the other side of the world...

Mostly unmanaged dedicated server hosting will just give you the server and expects you to manage it will with more than average expertise.

Probably nobody can provide you a server for $30 per month and expect you to learn linux on that.... especially without pay for support..

Hello,

I think most people have more than one computers and set up a LAN at home. Install linux on an old computer. Then use SSH to remote login the Linux box to play around and learn.

You can either get a low end box, or get VMWare and create several VEs. Then you can test whatever you want without affecting other VEs.
