Satellite Internet Access on Laptop

Hi all.

Question: Is it possible to install satellite ISP software on your laptop to be able to have Internet access worldwide?

I assume the answer is no, but man oh man... Isn't that the REAL benefit of satellite access, worldwide connectivity? I want to be in my car on the way to Mississippi (i'm in Missouri), and have laptop connectivity to the Internet during the entire journey, not just while passing by a hotspot for 5 seconds.

Is this possible?

Yes it is possible. The military does it all the time. Not cheap though.

Theres setups to watch tv via sat while driving so if its not already out for internet, it will be here soon...

May also want to look at something through your wireless provider via a pc card...

I know verizon offers something like this I asked my admin about it the other day when I saw an antenna sticking out of his laptop. He was in a run so I did not get much information on it yet but you may want to contact verizon as it is available it seems.

It could have however been some type of cell phone card but regardless it does pretty much the same thing.

I used a bluetooth cellphone and a axim PDA to connect and get online and also do the same with my laptop. If there is really no need to have it on all the time that is probably your best bet.

Verizon offers fast wireless internet connection for $79 a month in NYC and other major cities. The connection speed almost matches the dsl speed and if high speed internet isn't available you can browse the internet at the normal speeds

Talk to one of the big media outlets, they have a very compact system that is ISDN-like speeds. Be ready to spend more money than most people make in 5 years.

I hope that was an exaggeration

I wouldn't mind paying a bit more, but I would HOPE it wouldn't cost over $125-150 for such access.

A couple of you mentioned "wireless"... You weren't just referring to wireless phone internet connectivity were you? This can be done through a laptop, right?

Satellites don't offer worldwide connectivity because they have different sat's for different parts of the world. The best option you'd have would be some dialup or data service offered through your wireless phone. Plus the speeds are ridiculously slow and the price is very expensive the last time I checked on it which was a couple months ago.

why don't you look with CELL PHONE provider with data sevices. So as long as you are in cell phone range will still be able to connect to the internet. In india reliance infocom provide internet access at 100kbps on cell phones and it works just fine.

also please do post here whatever solution you get, i was also planning to visit USA for holidays in 1-2 months and it will be cool to have this kind of access while i am here

Hey X-Max,

If you're only going to be here for a couple months I don't think it'd be worth it to you. Most cell phones you need to get at least a one year contract and most are two. If you don't have a credit history in the US, you will have to put down a HUGE deposit. The only other solution would be to get a prepaid phone like a Tracfone, but their per minute rate is like 15¢ per min. and they don't offer data services. Most decent hotels however do have WiFi or some sort of Ethernet connectivity in your room.
