Spam...what would you do ?

This is regarding a good customer of mine. He has hosted his site for around a year and there was never a problem. He added two domains as addon domains. Today I got 10 SpamCop complaints. I did remove the two addon domains from his account. Now he told me the emails were sent by a third party who wanted to help promote his site and he didn`t know they would be sending spam.

He asked me if he could host these domains again.

What would you do now ? On the one hand I don`t think he will do it again but you never know. On the other hand I got these spam cop complaints and don`t want to be blacklisted by the anti-spam lists.

Would just tell him he can`t host the domains anymore or would you allow to add them again in like a week or something ?

I would say he can have the two addon domains, but set down some rules that he has to follow, and if he breaks then just suspend his whole account.

Doesn't everybody deserve a second chance?

You should tell that the blacklists and datacenters

I'll second Torith's opinion.

A 7 year customer sent some SPAM via a third party a while back. Wanted to promote their site, hired a third party like your customer, and WHAM 100 SPAM complaints. But we gave him a second chance, laid down ground rules in writing, and his company hasn't done anything since. Been two years since that incident.

If you want a good laugh, try contacting the company that sent the SPAM. They will promise you that all those people opted into the list.

We own our own DC. We got a little flack from one of our backbone providers, but we have an 8 year relationship with them and they know we're not a SPAM house.

It's a call you have to make. If you trust him then give him a second chance but, in my opinion, you should not allow the two add-on domains back on the server. I think that ^ terminating his entire account^ may be a bit harsh for a client that hasn't given you issues for a year and the issues were directly related to the add-on domains.

Sometimes, a phone call goes a long way. Give him a ring and gauge where he's at. A lot of times you can tell if someone is fibbing by the way they react to an "out of the blue" call from their host with some stern questions and advising of the TOS violation. If you allow the add-on domains back on be sure to scare the heck out of him by saying if it happens again his entire account will be suspended without warning.

Him not being able to have these two add-on domains hosted on your server will cost him less than you getting your IPs blacklisted. There is nothing wrong or unethical about being ruthless when it comes to enforcing your TOS and protecting your business, servers and the other users on the server.
