how to find if a server is using VPS....
hi friends,
can anyone guide me on 'how to find if a server is using or running VPS' after the Hosting provider gives me access details.
i think i am being taken for a ride by my hosting provider by giving a VPS and billing for a Dedicated Server.

if it is a dedicated server, ask for root access.
Under root, execute this command
df -h
If it is NOT a VPS, you should see /var, /home, /tmp, /usr
If your provider does not want to provide root access, you can check it under Service Status which is under cPanel.

Running df -h doesn't really mean if it is a dedicated, or not. It will just show each mount point, and a dedicated could have only one.
If it were a Virtuozzo VPS it would have a /proc/user_beancounters file. As well, running df -h would show a file system of VZFS.

Ok Ways to check if you are on a VPS
lspci | grep -i vmware
If this shows anything you are on vmware
ls -l /proc/mm
If this shows you are on a UML VPS
df | grep -i vzfs
If this shows you are on Virtuozzo
df | epgrep '[sh]d'
This will show if you aren't on a SCSI or IDE based drive system which *could* mean that its a VPS but not 100% guarenteed
BTW justadollarhostin APF/BFD work fine on UML based VPS FYI

Well, you should just ask for a full-root SSH access - that should be available for you as soon as it's a dedicated (or even virtual) server.
