I am not a reseller, but do want to host a a few websites on one host.
I just spoke with the owner of verhosting, very nice guy. They used to be a tech-support provider (operating their support center out of india) for other hosting companies, and now back their own company with this tech support business they built up.

Sounds pretty good to me, from the support stand point, but maybe a little fresh in the rest of the hosting business - though they seam to be competant.

Hostgator I guess has been doing hosting a little longer. ( Founded in 2002 )

Also appear to be very friendly and discussions seam mostly posative about their support.

based on almost no research, I started migrating to penguinhost.net, and after having a lot of hickups and problems with their service, and reading reviews I have decided I need to move on.

Any comments regarding varhosting vs hostgator would be appreciated.

(My shopping list was posted as "Suggestions which fit this bill?")

They are both good hosts with excellent service. One difference is that Varhosting allows overselling while Hostgator don't.

Heard many good things about Hostgator.. Hostgator has built a strong reputation over here on WHT and is definately one of the most recommended shared hosting and reseller hosts !

Yeps .. Hostgator.com have servers from The Planet :

and varhosting have mentioned that they have servers from ServerMatrix and The Planet :

The other host I am now very seriously considering is hostingzoom. Their Datacenter is apparantly aslo located at the Planet

have you emailed them with questions etc. to see how their support is besides looking here for the reviews.

heard varhosting and hostingzoom are quite good tho, hostgator had their problems in the past but i think they have solved it all, so they are all good choices

You know, I am not even a "Junior Guru Wannabe", but I have never yet found a hosting support rep that knows his unix as well as I do, and so many times I feel I have been training these guys in how their own systems work.... but what can you expect when the market for hosting requires everything for 10 bucks a month.

Any how, yes I have with varhosting, the rep was helpful, but like all most reps was lost when I started getting into more specific questions about if they set limitations on user nobody's umask.

I suppose I could try the drill on the other two choices as well.

I read on this WHT site a great review of how hostingzoom managed to restore all data and services in few hours when there was a hard drive failier.

Would anybody know if this was a result of their service, or simply a result of the datacenter they use (in which case, it would be common to all three choices above)

I must say, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the chat I had with Roj of VARhosting.net.

Informative. Answered all my questions. Personal, fast, friendly, knowledgable.
I brought up concerns, he related, and gave the reasons and methods they use to address the concerns.

Also, that I got to actually talk with the owner of the company one-on-one was excellent.

Didn't try that HostZoom place.. might in a bit.

I'm still disapointed with HostGator's sales staff...
They don't know the company polices (Some do, some don't), don't seem enthusiastic, and don't TRY! When talking to Roj, I could tell he had a genuin interest in talking to me. But the 4-10 minute response times of the HG rep I talked with left me feeling naglected.

I'm leaning more and more to VARhosting.net.

Though, I'm wondering if anyone has any negative feedback for VARhosting.net

On ending my conversation with the HG rep, I said "Thankyou for your time" And the reply I got was "Ok".
With Roj, I got: "Roj: Thanks Benjamin. You take care yourself and feel free to drop back in to chat with us."

Who do you think made me feel better about talking to them again?

for sure roj as he had the most personal contact instead of not being interested in you like HG rep. did
