I've read that APF firewall can block quite a lot of legitimate traffic if you're not constantly watching and fine tuning it etc. Based on your experience, is this true? Thinking of installing APF on my server, but since I'm just a newbie when it comes to server admin, won't be able to constantly watch over it. In this case, is APF a good idea, or are there other more "lax" firewalls?

No, I have no experience of it doing this. It'll block what you tell it to and nothing else.
