When a site appears then disappears within and after the 72 hour wait period

how do you know when there is actually a problem or its a DNS issue?

For the owner of the site they can check is their DNS is set correctly by going to these locations:

http://www.checkdns.net

http://www.dnsreport.com/

To check from the host's equipment. Login to each DNS server and run
- host domainName.com

ie for our site: linkonus.com these are the results.

[root@ns2 admin]# host linkonus.com
linkonus.com has address 216.240.136.60
linkonus.com mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.linkonus.net
[root@ns2 admin]#

By looking at the previous results you can track down errors. We have seen problems where double entries in DNS get strange results that until you run "host" on the name servers everything apears correct but you get dropped connections ro mail that bounces.

I forgot to mention that you might want to run a constant trace to your providers name servers. Mabey they are not online all the time.

We found a tool to alert us instantly when a ping conection is dropped or shows a lag.

You will want a time of less than 80 if you are paying for hosting.

Please note some providers block their equipment form random ping request for security reasons.
