American or Continental?

I have to fly in a few weeks and have a choice of American Or Continental. AA would be an MD80 (DC9) and Continental would be on the smaller Embraer 145. Prices & schedules being equal - who is better?

When I used to travel alot around the world, doing work on CO Switches, I flew American 95% of the time as long as it was going the place i needed to go.

I never had any issues with them, and very nice planes and so forth as well. IMHO American is one of the best.

On a small flight (less than 8 hours) I'd just go with the one that has more leg room - it's amazing what a difference a few inches will make.

Would be nice if you can provide origin/destination info. If your itn travels more than 5k or maybe even 10k, you may be qualified for the elite status for the remaining year till Feb 2006.

As for an opinion, I don't fly CO or NW codeshare operated by CO, which I get complementery domestic upgrade on both of them. CO ruined my trip once, and that's it, bye bye CO.

Also, if you need more details about the plane, try www.seatguru.com .

I'd probably go with AA and the MD80. Generally you'll have more space. While I like the Embraer, the seating is a little cramped. On the other hand, one thing that I like about those planes is the single row of seating on one side of the aisle -- if you get a seat there, you don't have to worry about someone next to you. The Embraers are fairly quiet, and the seats are comfortable, but there's not a lot of leg room. So I guess how important that is depends on how tall you are.

The MD80 class of planes is fairly quiet also for an aircraft of its size as long as you aren't seated all the way in the back, because then the engines aren't on the wings right next to you.

So the choice of equipment is pretty close to a toss-up, but based on my personal experience I'd expect better service and on-time performance from AA than from Continental.

AA, the MD80 while not a palace in the sky still beats the Embraer hands down. Ask for an ilse seat on the 3 row side.
