centos is -much- better.
Fedora is designed to be a test-bed almost for Redhat Enterprise (which centos is the bastard child of). CentOS is designed for servers, and so has very good support for cpanel and such.
Fedora makes too many releases, and at times you are un able to upgrade to the next revision w/o some fancy foot work.

Since it's a clean server, then the latest, 3.4 i'm assuming, should be great

probably server.iso if tere is a disc1.iso then I'd imagine there are more than one to download. The first option is probably the whole shebang.

I'd also recommend CentOS for much of the same reasons detailed above.
I'd say go with version 3.3 as 3.4 is fairly new. When fully stable, you can upgrade from 3.3 very easily with no downtime or problems.
The server iso is a cut down, one disc installation suitable for server installs without all the unrequired applications that those wanting a desktop or other installation will need.

You can't go wrong with CentOS. We've had a very positive experience thus far.

same here stick to 3.3 since 3.4 is new and as jim said wont be hard to upgrade which you wont need to do that soon.

Yes you can use 2.6 kernel but you'll need to do a manual compile (centos rpm kernel is 2.4).
If you wait until stable CentOS 4 or use the beta/rc release now this comes with 2.6 kernel rpm as standard.

We have been using fedora core 2 kernels on a few centos/rhe boxes modutil utils from fedora core 2. They work out well...
Quote:
root@um-373 [~]# uname -r
2.6.10-1.9_FC2
root@um-373 [~]# rpm -qa | grep modutils
modutils-2.4.26-16.centos
root@um-373 [~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 3.4 (final)
root@um-373 [~]#
|
I took the fedora 2 modutils package and rebuilt it for centos.
