Buying traffic?

There are websites that sell visitors "targeted" for webmasters for $2.50 for 1000 visitors. Minimum amount is 10k visitors

First, it sounds too good to be true already, so it probably is. What I want to understand is why.

Why is it not successful? Is the term "targeted" used vaguely?

I thought I'd give it a try sometime, it would only be $25 for 10k visitors, but at the end of the day, it's probably a waste of money.

I won't mention the site I found this at because I think the owner browses this forum

Beware ! Unless you get visitors interested in Web Hosting it will be a waste of money. If you have a few Banner Exchange banners on your site the will give you some targeted traffic from the 10,000 useless visitors it will not be worth it.

There is a category for webmasters, so whoever is looking around to create a website or anything related would be shown my site. I'm not sure exactly how it will be shown though

$2.50 for 1000 visitors and $25 for 10,000 visitors would be great if they were all targeted. You also have to be careful that they don't dump all or a lagre portion of your hits in a few hours. If this is done you won't only only get visitors that are not inerested in Web Hosting but you will get them multiple times. Maybe even hundreds of times. Watch out sometimes you get what you pay for. I found using a good banner Exchange will hepl recoupe some loss.

Most of those places work by full page popunder ads from various 'targeted' publisher sites. So the 'webmaster' category means your site will come up in a full page popunder from some site dealing with webmaster topics.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm guessing they look for words as broad as "website" or "site" and just count it as a webmaster category, heh

Most of the time it is just a popunder ad.

And that counts as a visit rather than just an impression.

What rip.

Yeah the smart thing to do here as mentioned is to use a banner exchange to get some value out of the hits.
