Too many died processesss... help pls.. :-(
Hello guys, I'm facing a problem.
I'm with VPS with 512MB ram guranteed, and have an Invision Power Board 2.0.3 running on the space. When there are ONLY 50 online users withn 20 minutes, my memory usage is 420MB!!! Which is extreamly too high!!
But when I type 'ps -aux', and got the following report, it seems that there are a lot of 'died' processes created and taking memory usage (look at the 'START' column):
Code:-bash-2.05b$ ps -aux USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.0 0.0 1304 480 ? S Jan22 0:02 init root 12941 0.0 0.0 1372 536 ? Mind printing the lines from your httpd.conf that include:
Timeout 30
KeepAlive Off
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
KeepAliveTimeout 7
MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 15
StartServers 40
MaxClients 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 250
Also, consider adding a crontab for:
*/6 * * * /path/to/apache/bin/apachectl graceful
That will clean up any extra httpd procs that are idle.Jakiao

Thank you so much Jakiao, but what do you mean by this:
"Also, consider adding a crontab for:
*/6 * * * /path/to/apache/bin/apachectl graceful
"
How may I do that? Should I run it in SSH manually everytime?
Thank you!

In ssh, type "crontab -e"
Use your arrow keys to go down to the last line and press the letter "o". From there, paste that line in and then "Esc" followed by "Shift+ZZ".
Please be sure to get the exactly path for your apachectl command. Just to be safe, could you type "locate bin/apachectl" and post a reply with the output? I will reply with the exact line to enter into the crontab.Jakiao

None of those processes are dead. Looks like you might have some other issues you need resolved...

Such as Apache not cleaning its procs =p Sheps, is it just me, or is -every- weird issue classified as some catastrophic issue with the server? "Hm ... you don't have this program I need for kernel making (make it easier)! You MUST have some HUGE issue!" =p

From the looks of your "ps -aux" command, seems like nothing more than a busy VDS account.
Your memory usage of '450 MB' is quite normal as Linux provides about 90% of total RAM at all times.
I'd be more focused on the Server load, as that will tell you if there are problems.• PotentProducts.com - for all your Hosting needs

An output from top would really help to see if there are problems or not. As Rob mentioned linux uses up all the memory it can, which makes sense. If you were a computer and had the choice of running a program in fast fast ram, or just leaving that ram fee and using a slow IDE disk, which would you rather use?

Hi, I've tried to tweak many places, and I've Jakiao's parameters for the file, it really works!! Now my memory usage is not more than 180MB!!! I'm really happy with that!
So here is the "locate bin/apachectl" output:

ps -aux is good for looking at certain things, in an instance like this a top output would really help to see if there is even a problem

Hi, ok, I just remember this way I did to modify crontab:
pico -w /etc/crontab
But how come the content of it is different from typing "crontab -e" ??
-_-"
Edit.. so, now do I still need to run "crontab -e" to add that line? What's the different between two?
Thanks!Last edited by ttk_2k; 01-24-2005 at 09:47 AM.

Hey, hey. Leave you and your kernels out of this. Or next time I won't compile them for you. You lazy slacker.
You don't need to add it to the crontab. It won't clean up anymore processes then it already has. Your problem seems to have been your KeepAlive settings.Dan Sheppard ~ Freelance whatever

Sure, Sheps ^^ I can see now my IPB 2.0.3 board is flying ^^ With 50 onlines in 20 minutes, the Memory usage is only not more than 150 MB!!
I've asked my technical support and they say my CPU usage is fine. So.. I've just done!
Thank you for your help guys, best regards!
