UUNet - Can't go wrong with one of the original players. However there are others that I like...it's hard just to select one.
Abovenet <-- Great!
Broadwing <-- Not a fan
Cogent <-- Great!! Best value for the buck
Global Crossing <-- glbx is still a pretty good value
Qwest <-- not impressed
Sprint <-- pretty decent transit
Time Warner <-- not impressed with twtelecom...
UUNET <-- Great!!
Williams <-- not so much a fan of wcg either, but haven't used them much
XO <-- Decent
Also: Why aren't you considering say, Level3 or Algx? Or Savvis/CW?I wish all my traffic went through AS174.

Cogent/PSInet for things that aren't mission critical but require high bandwidth but not low latency (IE Adult/Porn, streaming audio)

Level 3, Telia, and Peer1 are my favourites.
Though Peer1 is still quite a small network compared to the likes of Level 3, I still think it's excellent.

UUNet is where it's at. Low latency, good routing in the USA, decent routing to Europe.

What, neither Savvis or Level(3) are on the list? Interesting. If I had to chose from the ones on the list I'd say Global Crossing. Next on the list I'd put Sprint, Time Warner, and UUNet. Unless you're on the west coast I'm not a huge fan of Abovenet, and their financials are terrible as well.
Note: I'm not votng out of protest since two of the best backbones were left out, Savvis and Level(3), which are superior to any of the ones listed here, in my opinion.Karl Zimmerman - Founder & CEO of Steadfast

This is a great poll !! I would say Level3 and Global Crossing, very fast speeds to most of Europe. UUnet has really high latency. TW is crap.

voted for Sprint - Good connectivity throughout the US & decent connectivity to Europe and Asia because of local providers purchasing transit from them.
GBLX - same but can't vote twiceIn just two days, tomorrow will be yesterday.

I voted for GlobalCrossing - it's a strong network from what I've seen, especially with many overseas routes. BTN has nice overseas routes as well & you've already got them, so maybe UUNET. From my experience, Williams bandwidth can greatly lack peering in some areas of the country, and Cogent is usually no longer the best bang for your buck anymore. Lots of providers are charging similar prices for better networks. Cogent isn't all bad though, their network in Texas is really well connected.
