Any difference in using an Australian server and a US server

I'm thinking of using a dedicated server solution for my hosting needs. Most of the users of my sites are in Southeast Asia. I would like to find out are there any difference in the speeds and connectivity if i use a US based server and an Australian server, trying to optimize my users experience.

Thinking of using servermatrix dedicated server solution, US .. or aussiehost, Aust ... Any other suggestions.

Thanks heaps!

Best way to go is to ask the host how you can test the connection speed. Go with the one that has the lowest ping and fastest transfer rate to the area you are targetting.
No one here can tell you which physical location could be better because it is not the only factor in speed. Network hops, uplink speed (NIC, Switch, etc), and even server speed are all factors. You can host a site right next door to your customer and if you are using a 2400bps modem, it will still be as slow as molasses. Also, if your customers are going to be using slow connections, maybe your servers' speed won't even be an issue.

Yes, there is a difference, in pricing, speed, and latency. Bandwidth in Australia is about 10 times as expensive.

but if you are located in australia and need support during 'your' daytime then getting a server in australia would be adviceable, though there are also host in usa that has 24 hours support.

Latency from AU east coast to US west coast is about 150ms. Latency from US west coast to US east coast is about 70ms.

Singapore might be worth checking out. BTW - this is the correct link to the user Aussie Bob mentioned http://www.webhostingtalk.com/member...o&userid=61730
