GoDaddy doing VPS

GoDaddy is now offering VPS plans. Is this old news?

Economy plan looks to be inline price wise and spec wise with hosting companies that I have seen here offering VPS. I wonder what type of Data center and support we are talking about at GoDaddy.

Anyone with them?

Cheers,

Are you talking about this?

Hrm, I know there are lots of negative reviews on GoDaddy, but my personal experience with them is not all that negative. Their support would answer the easier questions clearly (like those to do with the navigation of their labyrinthal website), but for the slightly more technical ones, e.g., cookies, MySQL priveleges, etc., they would sound more like canned messages than real support.

Their level of support is no match for the support I'm getting right now with ServInt. When I think about the amount of questions that I'm asking ServInt, and ponder the possibility of moving all those questions to GoDaddy -- I would shudder. I just can't imagine having to jump through all those canned message-like answers just to get some real answers.

I've also tried out their Economy Shared Hosting (which is, of course, not the same as their VDS solution, but I'm a whiner) ... and you know how they say you'd get one MySQL db with it? Well, they should also explain that the MySQL account doesn't have LOCK TABLE/UNLOCK TABLE priveleges. And there are a plethora of PHP scripts out there that use LOCK TABLE/UNLOCK TABLE. So to me that lack of information is lack of honesty.

I don't mind letting them host my name (even with the negative reviews on that arena) ... but I'm never going to let them host my site ever again. The hosting business, IMHO, is a lot more delicate than the domain registration business. A lot more to watch out for. And GoDaddy just isn't right for the field.

p.s. Are we in the wrong forum?

I would never get a hosting solution from a Registrar. Search around WHT and I am sure you will find feedback regarding them as well. Maybe it will not be exactly for VPS solutions, but it will give you the basic idea.

I agree. I think Godaddy should stick with what made them what they are and that is domains. I have talked to alot of people who tried their web hosting and vps and they ran away quick after they experienced the terrible support. I am sure with time that they might get better at it but who knows?

Eh? They do that? Where in the world?

That's one of the few reasons left why I'm still letting them host my name. I thought with a larger userbase they're less likely to block out my side of the world in the future.

GoDaddy Support Woes

Yeah...I didn't do enough research into VPS providers. I went ahead and got a VPS with GoDaddy---they've always been fine by me as a registrar, why not a host? (oops)

For one, I screwed up today...thought with all the extra bandwidth, I could host a Counter-Strike server! I dive into Plesk, add custom firewall rules, activate rules---error?! Hmm...the script Plesk generates looks ok...I go and run the script as root in the shell. Ouch...my VPS is totally hosed! I can't connect for anything!!

Logged a ticket at 3:00 PM CST...its 11:00 PM CST...no response from GoDaddy. I call support, waiting on hold for 15 minutes while they "contact the correct department", then hear that my issue should be resolved by tomorrow evening! WHAT?! Thank goodness I'm only hosting my personal "fun" sites right now...my uptime would be shot!

Too bad I prepaid for the year to get the 20% discount...

Tune in this time tomorrow for more!

Hi netrixgroup,
This sounds like a disaster and I hope everything gets fixed for you quickly. Maybe see if you can get a refund and take your lumps and go to a provider like servint. I have a test vps with them their and their average ticket time is about 5-15 minutes Plus they know what they are doing. If not, good luck with Godaddy.

A Counterstrike server just won't run worth a crap on a VPS anyway. I'd really advise against it.

Woot woot!

They've fixed my issue! It would appear around 4:00PM CST (only 25 hours after submitting the trouble ticket), my VPS is up and running again.

Buyer beware...

And yeah...I didn't even think about it that CS would probably be dogged within a VPS.

Paul

I don't see how they are inline spec wise, they don't provide the amount of dedicated ram, burstable ram, or cpu. I tried asking them three times in different forms of the same question and they were never able to give me an answer.

Yeah, they block a dozen or so countries: china (x billion people), romaina, etc. They even blocked singapore and hong kong for a while.

Going with a registrar for hosting is asking for trouble.

Registars only offer services like hosting, vps's, id protect, email, etc to make up for losses on their loss leader domain name sales. It's not their primary business nor their strength, expecting quality product and service from them compared to established vps/dedicated server companies is a real stretch. Basically the Walmart's of the industry up there with 1&1.

godaddy support

just keep in mind that Godaddy is a pretty large company and you cant expect the first 3 people you talk to to know anything about your server. You will need to be transferred to level 3 support for anything other than basic quetions.
