managed.com is worthless....

As of around 3pm on Friday our server at manged went offline. We were told that we are on the IRC network and that network is:

"We're currently having routing problems with our IRC network. Please be patient while we try to resolve this issue. I'll let you know when it comes back up. "

First managed does not have tech support on the weekends. They have a phone number but nobody answers during the weekends. They do say they have reboot service that is 24/7 though. And the answering machine just says email "reboot@managed.com or support@managed.com" if you have trouble.

So after sending many emails through the weekend we finally get one response on saturday at noon:

"We were having problems getting additional IP space for the IRC network and having some other issues with XO so we have discontinued our services with XO. I do not have any additional information about this issue, this is just what management
informed me. I truly apologize for this sudden news, however this is out of my hands. Our IRC network was a private XO line. Since we have discontinued services with them, you will not be
able to keep the same ips. Your current ips will be changed. Sorry for any inconveniences this has caused and may cause. Due to this problem, we have decided to compensate you with a month
of free service. If you have already payed for this month, next month will be free. Please give me some time to assign you new ips. Once again, sorry for any inconveniences."

This to me sounds like 100% BS! First off who in their right mind would cancel the XO network and stranding all their customers (including myself) just because they ran out of IP's? Clearly they would get another network, migrate the customers to that network and THEN cancel the XO network.

It is clear that XO cut them off for probably no payment or some violation of their user agreement.

Now constant emails to support as of now 2pm on Sunday reveal nothing. No IP's have been sent or communication from them.

What is mind boggling to me is how can you run a hosting business and not do support on the weekends. This crap reminds me of a movie 'Real Men' where the Russians are in a gun fight and then just as they are about to capture John Ritter and Belushi in the phone booth they leave due to lunch time.

They have 1 damn job. Keep my server online, thats it. But apparently the weekend is sleep in day. And who knows if this will even get resolved tomorrow.

DONT USE MANAGED.COM, they are 100% WORTHLESS for HOSTING YOUR BOX ON.

But you did receive an email on the weekend so clearly they have at least one person in doing support who is / was willing to provide new ip addresses.

Agreed the XO line thing seems to be only part of the story. The way I see it, you would get new ips (I assume you actually have people connect via dns name), some frustration with downtime and then a free months of service which although it doesnt remove the frustration is a reasonable response to compensate you for your troubles.

Shouldn't have happened but stuff does happen and from an SLA perspective its a good response in my opinion.

Exclamation what are you kidding?

What are you talking about? They have one person who logged in once or twice and sent out an email? I have sent over 10 emails this weekend and getting no responses from any of them. It is clear they dont have any real support that can do anything over the weekend.

I have not received any IP's so their "please give me some more time to assign you your IP" was over 24 hours ago and still counting.

The bottom line is an outage for 3+ days and still going is unaccepable for any hosting company. A few hours of downtime is upsetting but acceptable.

It is clear they did not have backup plans in place. This single point of failure shows their inexperience in this industry.

Ah ok. It sounded like they actually responded over the weekend. Didn't realize it had been that long. I will say that its quite possible if what they said is real that the only irc line they have is offline that you may not be the only client offline. There is likely a large mass of emails they are dealing with.

Not a great situation. But I don't know about inexperience in the industry. Anyone with half a clue and more than a week in "the industry" know what they are signing up for with managed.com. Many people have used them and know they are signing up for a low cost provider not a class A provider.

billr sorry to bust your bubble buddy, but you get what you pay for.

im a managed.com customer & dont ever gripe. why? ive been with them over a year & know what to expect. when i signed up i knew they didnt provide support on the weekends & read reviews etc.

do your homework next time before you go with a host & if you want somebody who is reliable, go with a company that is.

but dont come here and bitch & moan when everyone is just secretly laughing at you, if not straight to you.

you dug your grave, now lay in it

Billr

Stop moaning for christ's sake.

If you want support, pay for it, goto ThePlanet or ServerMatrix or somewhere.

Don't expect an Audi at the price of a Ford.

Thumbs down nice pep talk guys

I think you guys are missing the point..

A cheap *** provider is one that is slack with some scenarios:

1) Like oh hum he needs another IP. In a few days I will find one.

2) This customer is complaining about some packet loss, I will drink some more coffee and goto a football game then come back and see if I can figure it out.

3) This guy needs to know why he is losing packets because the switch we put him on is in half duplex and his ethernet card is in full duplex. However since we are so cheap we cannot figure this out so we will just not fix it.

A hosting provider that does not get a box that is offline in a reasonable amount of time is not a CHEAP company but a neglagent one.

Sure forms talk about bad support but this is much more than bad support.

Lets face it, this issue is grounds for Better Business Buero as they just are not providing the service they claimed to do.

Can someone please tell me WHO in there right mind would actually look at this and go. Well my box is down its a good thing that I dont do anything important with it and will just wait until it comes back online... One day, three days, 1 week. Oh well I am sure it will come back. Again since I dont do anything on it I can wait forever.

Nobody puts a box on the net and does not care if the box is not on the net.. NOBODY.

I cannot believe they have only 1 connection , this does show they dont give a hoot about the client.

They actually have multipel connections and multiple networks, but nothing BGP'd. The IRC network only has one connection. The other network to my knowledge only has one connection.

Yes, according to what I know they had IRC servers on XO and the normal servers on Above.

All i can say is before you brought ur box you should of read about managed.com in the forums which has a few threads with other people having problems.

As for not working on weekends i have sent them a email on a weekend and got an email back within the hour . I am a reseller for someone on manged.com and the server has had no problms what so ever.

As a-m said you do get what you pay for !.

You realy think a managed server can be that cheap ? I very much doubt it.

Its a catchline to get you to join thier services sad to say it but its true . Its like buying a reseller account that says "Unlimited Space & Bandwidth" Which there is nothing like that. Yea they may say theyadd more hard drives space which does cost for thier dedicated server but where are they making the profit for that hard drive ?.

There is only a few dedicated server companys out there that you can trust and they are kinda hard to find .

I do say that managed.com does have a good deal on thier services they are great if your starting to come into the dedicated world. For a first time buyer in the server world i whould recommend them because they are cheap you can have a pay around with the server etc without worring about a big bill . When they get more advanced then they can go into the more faster and bigger servers .

You can say i check these things before i signup to services.

Dont get me wrong i aint calling managed.com good or either bad i say they are a normal pay for what you get kinda service.

Anyways thats my thought of manage.com
