1and1

Good day all,

I was just browsing some sites that I like the look off, and come across one and ones site once again (www.oneandone.co.uk) I happened to notice also that they are selling web hosting with 800MB of space and 10GB transfer in the UK for £4.99.

Bandwidth in the UK is getting cheaper, it is getting much better but from general calculations how is 1and1 making money from this, the only explanation I can think of is the amount of clients they have all they are doing now is increasing there profit margin and selling these services they are getting just profit?

Does anyone know the range of clients 1and1 have?

Thanks for your time

DislexiK

P.S I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this, please inform me if it is the wrong section and move it mods

That price sounds quite reasonable actually (about $9/month is it?) If you have a look around you will see that there are a number unlimited $1/month hosts. Those are the ones that you should stay way from .
Those guys seem to have a decent website. Also their domain was registered in 1999. Both things do not mean anything about their service but that they are not a complete scam.
Also do not be fooled by numbers. They offer 10 GB /month and if indeed this seems much for a UK site; but very few of their clients would actually reach this bandwidth.
If an average visitor of a website downloads 1 MB per visit (which is an overestimate) this means 10 000 visitors /month. This is quite a lot actually - 300 /day. Very very few websites. get that popular.
Most would not go beyond 1 GB /month. Human nature however is greedy so when offered so much at a seemingly low price most people go for it.
The simple truth is you do not need that much bandwidth and most of their customers wont use it . You could say they oversell bandwidth - although this is a bit hard to determine.
It is claims like this however that are a bit puzzling :
700 1GB POP3/IMAP account (from their plan description)- Do they really believe any account would try to store 700 GB of mail on their server?
Anyhow I am not saying those guys are not good. Best search for some feedback from someone who has used them?
Regards
vessel.

they have more customers than any other hosting company in the world except for IBM (or so i have been told, this may not be fact)

they have 5 data centres, 18 gigabits per second of available connectivity at each of their centres. But, what you are saying really isnt that surprising... what if they have a storage array with 36 terrabytes ? or even 4tb would be 4000 X £4.99 if they sold a gigabyte for that, and they wouldnt even need to oversell.

Very impressive indeed. I have obviously not done my reading on webhost marketing (doing most of my work in customer support section ) so I have sounded out of tune.
It is good indeed that those guys are that big which means that they do have the technology to provide what they are offering.
The only problem for such companies might be that customer support side of the problem.
Some are indeed impressive in this - having in mind the number of customers they serve, but with others the system is just too slow or structured the wrong way.

1and1

The subject of 1and1 has been touched on several times in these forums. In a nutshell the prices are good and getting better and the support sucks.

If you never have the need to speak with tech support I am sure you will be fine otherwise look for recommendation within WHT.

I really hated my time with 1and1 but to be fair the uptime was very good.
