Domain name to expire (I want it)
A domain name is about to expire and I want it. There currently isn't a site (or even a place holder) on the website so, I'm just hoping the previous owner will let it lapse instead of paying to renew it (I'm doing the same with a domain I own currently)
Whats the standard process for this?
Is there a place where I can go that will automatically grab the name up for me when it becomes available (at the expiration date, etc) or is it's simply a scramble for the name?
Has anyone done a transaction similar to this before?
Is it benificial or detrimental to contact the current owner about possibly transferring ownership before the expiration?
(He could ask an insane amount for it then just renew it if I balk since he knows there's intrest in it or he could play ball... Don't know if I want to roll the dice that yet?)

Well, if the domain is good, then you don't stand much of a chance at getting it. Unless of course you're willing to spend lots and lots of money for it.

It's nothing like business.com or anything. It's a series of letters (6) that isn't a word. Basically it works out perfectly to an acronym that I'm planning on building a site off of...
So I don't think there's a massive demand for it

False
There are many inexpensive ways of getting names. Use a backordering system which doesn't cost lots and lots of money. Also you can try to hand reg it which I have done on a few times and got a few great names

The simple fact is. If the domain is worth anything, it will go double, or more. Its a lot different now then it was a year ago.

You must be aware that if the domain is important to you it is not guaranteed by backordering .
Actually according to ICANN policies all domains MUST be returned to ICANN on the moment they are dropped and to be free to any FIRST winner .
So MY REAL SUGGESTION is : You go to each site you find or a registrar and see , if the backorder is available on that domain then you can order it , now to save money by not backordering from 2 or 3 websites together (although its better if you are willing to spend a little money and want that domain )
You just make sure how much competition on that domain by seeing how many available backorders on it .
For example if at godaddy you can find the backorder is available then no one before you has ordered it . While on snapnames and newly they have made this new thing ( to collect more money ofcourse ) that two pple can backorder same domain and they will let it be for the higher bidder !
Now as much as you domain worth to you , you should be more backordering from different sites to highen your chances ( most will also let you backorder another domain if it failed for free )
And then you can get the domain at greater chances.
If you found that you are able to backorder domain everywhere and there is no demand on it , then i suggest you try backordering at one place only !
Be aware also that now expiry date isnt the date when it drops now most registrars can hold it 30 -45 days after the date shown on whois data.
