which processor would be best?

background info:
I'm wanting to build a good, well rounded linux erver. I will be hosting things like web/ftp/mysql and some games like counterstrike and an mmorpg. I don't expect the web traffic to be high but the mmorpg server works with mysql and can drive sql's processor usage way up.

the question:
which processor type would suit my needs best?(and possible speed too). I was originall thinking of going with an AMD64 3500+, but I heard that since i will be running so many different apps an Intel chip might fit better because of HT.

Any thoughts?

I've also looked into opterons a bit but they are awfully expensive and my budget is some what limited. Though if need be I would be willing to put down $600-$700 on the motherboard and cpu.

Thanks!
