Gates gives $42.6 million to fight malaria
Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Combating malaria has been one of the primary goals of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and its latest gift of $42.6 million will fund a nonprofit drug company's high-tech take on an ancient Chinese remedy.

Did he give it in unrestricted cash this time, or in licenses, or money to be used on Microsoft technologies?

Well, i guess he's making up for his sucky software (naah perhaps not ) . Anyway it's my belief that, you won't gain anything if you keep amassing what you earn if you don't give back to society.

He has about 45 billion, he could make a thousand donations like that. Consider this, if over the years you would save up a million dollars, would a donation of 1000$ really count that much?
Thats one aspect.
The other aspect is that just because someone is wealthy doesnt mean he should donate to charity and be a philanthrop, it certainly doesnt mean that one should donate for the credit and recognition.
So while its somewhat admirable, its not THAT admirable IMHO.

Bill Gates is the #1 person who has donated the MOST EVER. Bill and Melinda have donated half of their assets, around $23 Billion Dollars.

Giving any money to charity is admirable. To me the man who has $10 to his name and gives $1 to chairty is much more admirable, but thats just me.

This turned into a strange topic of discussion. I think, aside from how much money the person had when he or she donated is irrelevant. The charity just got $42.6 million.
I wouldn't turn this thread into "Yeah, but that only means $1,000 if one didn't have all his money." This man gave up a lot of money. Maybe it wasn't as much to him, as it was to the charity; which is better for the charity.
I'm just trying to figure out the point of such claims. What difference does it make? Are you feeling jealousy on behalf of one with less money, who donates less money, because he or she wouldn't be recognized?

Pharmaceutical companies, for commercial reasons will not work on a drug to cure Malaria since the majority of those infected are poor africans, in other words no $$$, this is where someone like Bill Gates comes in and makes a difference, good job Bill!

Good job bill, next step donate a million dollars to the fund for starving emzecs

That may be true on the books, but don't be fooled. But there was a recent article that showed the real insight, for example 10,000 Windows XP licenses with a RRP of $200 isn't really a $2 million donation is it?

Oh my..who cares. He donated, he helped, get over it!! No one would be debating over XXX amount of dollars if he didn't give it away in the first place. Everyone would just keep yapping about his company and messed up OS.
I'm glad he gave it to a good cause, diseases are amongst the worst epidemics we all have to face and overcome. Many of the richest in the world are greedy or greedier when it comes to donations.......to me it seems if everyone in the wealthy circles would donate a healthy amount to all the charities...we wouldn't be having such a funding problem with most.....blah blah blah.....
