Dedicated Hosting to VPS or Shared?

I have had a dedicated server for the past 5 years which at year end I'll be shutting down.

I have been migrating all my smaller sites to shared hosting but I have concerns for two of my websites and I'm seeking a solution.

I'm coming from freeBSD looking to move to same or Linux.

Both are portal websites.
One is about 1 gig in content, the other 500mb.
Would require 2 gb+ storage to cover both.
Each sees about 2-3 gigs traffic monthly
Lot's of cgi scripts, mostly classifieds, news, events, and such.
Both use several mySQL databases.
Both use php.

I am currently the only user with root access but would like to offer good control panel access for the webmaster of the 2nd site.
I'd like them to be able to make nearly all site related changes for their site (email accounts, scripts, etc...)

Don't know if I should set these sites up seperately or put them under one account.

It sounds like shutting down the dedicated server is a wise choice financially.

What's your budget for hosting these sites?

I think those clients could easily fit into a shared account. It really depends on the server the host will be putting them on.

Since they are script intensive, a nice box with hyperthreading would be a plus.

Thanks for the replies

I am certainly saving some $$$. I never really used the full features of a dedicated box. As far as budget, I'm thinking I can find a good host for $49 per month or less.

Here is one concern. I used to webmaster both of these sites and they were my busiest. Now, there is another webmaster on one of the sites so I'd like to give him access to handle nearly all functions, but idon't want anyone on my main site but me. I may just split them to two seperate shared accounts.

I looked at a ServInt VPS account after going through some topics here. I may go with that option.

If you need FULL control, then definately go for the VPS.

It's not that I need FULL control but, what a headache after moving some of my websites to virtual hosting to not be able to view error logs (mostly for repairing scripts). I've always done all my .conf file work (adding/deleting users and such) by telnet so the thought of having cPanel is a plus!

This can all be done in a shared environment.

ServInt and VPSColo are good ways to go for VPS, that would run you around $45-$50, you could also put the other accounts in there also and be done with it.

Thanks for the replies. I went with a ServInt VPS and cPanel. Moved everything this past weekend. Did not even know about VPS until viewing this forum. Saved lots of $$$ and still have my root access. Woo Hoo, happy Christmas too me!

VPS is far superior to shared accounts in many ways. HOWEVER, poorly managed vps could be WAY much worse than a shared hosting on non-oversold server with excellent maintainance. I have the experience of the vps (no names here) which crashed when I've swicthed SpamAssassin on and shared accounts which taken the switching with absolute grace. Just FYI, my daily email 'dose' is 500-800mb. And email is very very resource-hungry.

My 2c.
