how does expiration really work?

I have a domain that I'm interested in acquiring whose expiration date has passed (but only by a day or so). It is still listed in the registrar's whois as "active", and the zone file is active (so the domain's website is active). So, I have a few questions:

1. When should I expect things to move into "redemption" status from "active"
2. I initially thought that it didn't make sense for me to try any backorder service until I know it is in redemption since if the current owner renews it while in "active" status, I'm wasting my time and $$ by trying to backorder it. Does this approach make sense, or should I be thinking differently?

Pool.com has a good explanation of the domain name life cycle.

See the domain's status using: http://www.freewho.com/checker/index.php

I thought the owner could still renew in redemption state but pay a big fee. Then when it gets to pending delete, it will go public not long after that.

I think you only get charged by the backorder service if it is successful in aquiring the domain. I guess if it's a popular domain it might be a good idea to use one, but if it seems like there wouldn't be many interested any you could take a gambel and wait till it's available.
