I'm quite mad.... I was told in 9th grade that, it was my most important grade to do well in. I really never believed them because I just figured all our grades were averaged together in the end. Well, today I come to find out its cumulative, as in, 9th grade's grades are one average. Then 9th & 10th are averaged together, and then that average is averaged with 11th grade, then that average is averaged with my final year, 12th grade.
This makes absolutely no sense. I did not do as well as I liked in 9th grade (~3.0) because of other problems that went on in my life. Now, this is the problem, for this year (so far) and last, my average is a 3.8, but it won't even make a dent into the other averages because it is not actually an average, it is a stupid cumulative. I could pretty much get a 1.0 this semester, and it would make little to no difference to my cumulative grade point average.
So basically what I'm getting at is, each semester does not have an equal part into my final gpa, as the years go on, they count less and less.
WHY IS IT NOT AVERAGE OF ALL OF THEM TOGETHER?

Well school systems can be really weird. I stopped taking school seriously since the 6th grade(in the 12th now) because I realized that public school is just not worth getting stressed out over. 6-8th grade teachers had favorites and sometimes changed grades for students(happened one time with me). Most could not teach. In 9th grade I went to a different school and boy I was surprise that teachers could actually teach. I actually learned something that year. 10-11th grade was ok, but the classes were so slow and tutoring was very hard to get. Now I'm in 12th grade and I'm disappointed that I have to take 4 classes when I only need 2 to get out. I have to take 4, so either the state or government(forgot which one) can get money for me attending school. I used to be a military brat, so I have experienced many different public schools and their systems seem to be mostly the same. It's sad. I wish the school systems were more serious and organized. I always read the education news at cnn.com because I hope the school systems do get better. At least half of my school life was a big waste of my time. I wish back then I wasn't that naive and self studied, but I'm doing that now because it's never to late. But I am glad that I am almost out. Been waiting for the day since I was in kindergarten lol.
I also like what my advanced math teacher told my math class. He said that High School really isn't that important. You can make a 4.0 in High School, but once you are in college, what you did in High School doesn't matter any more.

This system of averages at your school is pretty MESSED UP
I've seen a lot of BS in HS and it's cool, until you remember: APs can help you out big time in college and HS grades, while may not matter, in 99% of cases DO matter in your admission.
Lame, sure. But that's the way it works.

While I like your anecdote, unfortunately (as I am still learning, albeit slowly) high school does affect where you go to college. It's a double-edged sword. Sure, what you *did* in college doesn't matter once you're in the college of your choice, but how do you plan to get there?

Everything is like that though. As soon as you go one more step up the scale the previous one is worthless. I did GCSEs, then that led to A-Levels which led to University and a degree. No one is ever going to say to me so what did you think about GCSE Geography. However if you don't work on the current level then you won't get to the next one.

Keep in mind that not everyone wants on to go to community college. On the same token, not everyone wants to go to Harvard, or, for that matter, any college. It's all up to you.
Personally, I don't think I'm going anywhere with my current ~3.4 average in sophomore year. My PSAT score was also probably astonishingly horrible, considering I'm usually pretty 'smart'.

3.4 unscaled(all classes based out of 4.0) is pretty decent.
I'm hanging at 4.6(Honor class=5.0 AP class=6.0) with 5 APs in past 3 years and 5 AP classes this year(yes - I'm a self-professed idiot).

Uh... I was almost positive you can only go to 5.0, and that's with AP... Honors don't boost your GPA, at least here.

WTF! You guys are all lucky
my AP classes add +.5 to that classes grade point
and honors adds +.25
So...basically in my school the highest is like 4.2-4.4? at best, and thats if you take nearly every damn class as honors [there are some classes you cant take as honors]
anyway, i dont understand what the original poster meant?
unless he meant tihs 9th grade final gpa = 1
10th grade final gpa = 2
11th = 3
12th = 4
and so 1+2+3+4 / 4 = final gpa
cause thats how my school does it

It's almost meaningless as I'm realizing being a senior. Almost ALL colleges have a masterlist of your school/board of education's plays with AP/Honors and at the end of the day, I think it's your unscaled GPA that matters mostly.
