Question

"Matrix" kind of question

Suppose you think you are renting a dedicated win2k3 server but actually you are on a virtual server (VMWare etc.)?

Is there any way to know or figure it out, or does the virtual server emulate a dedicated server so well it cannot be distinguished?

I know exactly what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know, you can't explain. But you feel it. You felt it since your lease began. That there's something wrong with your server. You don't know what it is, but it's there. Like a splinter in your mind -- driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?

Right now, yeah, I'm wishing I took the blue pill...

Unfortunately no one can be told about the Virtual Server You have to see it for yourself.

....and just coz im a big nerd....

I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a Server without you. A server without rules and controls, without vmware and boundries. A server where anything is possible. Where we go from there is the choice I leave to you.

Its possible to know, if you are running on vmware/many other emulators...

On Linux, just cat /proc/pci or lspci
You'll find vmware emulating some devices, or even qemu, and bochs... etc..

even dmesg, you'll find vmware drives everywhere..

On Windoze ( I didn't use M$ things for a long time but this is what I remember )..

Right-Click on my computer, go to properties, and click on device manager..

Extend everything, you'll find that vmware emualting some drives..

( Bochs, QEMU wont be able to emulate hardware in approx, native speed, the only emulator for now is Vmware, ( M$ will be releasing thier emulator soon.. )..)..

Thanks for the answer.

And to everyone else, thanks for the entertainment.

I tried to Architect a solution; However, I was again frustrated by failure. I have since come to understand that the answer eluded me because it required a lesser mind, or perhaps a mind less bound by the parameters of perfection.

No offense <g>.
