Cisco 2948g layer 3?

It looks like there are two different kinds of 2948g switches, one is level 2 only and the other does basic level 3. How can I tell them apart?

Can a 2948g be upgraded to do level 3?

This is the version information I have and am wondering if it will do l3 routing.

Code:
WS-X2948G bootrom version 4.4(1)

As far as i know the hardware is different, so no a simple code upgrade wont do it for you.

The 2948G-L3 is an excellent starter L3 router. It runs IOS and can provide rate limiting and filtering on the Gig-E uplink ports.. This box will do BGP, IS-IS, OSPF and basic static routing. Its not the best choice for L2 only or hybrid (l2/l3) but for L3 only you will be hard to find another switch to perform as well at that price.
