I was looking at Dell's switches about 10 days ago and found what I perhaps thought to be a mistake on their site. I could buy a PowerConnect 3324 for £100. The base price was for £299 but you could deduct £199 for not choosing their service pack. I bought two switches @ £100 each and with VAT + Delivery this came to £251.45.

I got my order receipt email through a few days later, and saw they charged me £251.45 for the 1 switch!! I didnt really think much of it until I got just one switch through the post.


I decided to give them a call, and took a look at their website again. The base price for the switch had rocketed to £448!!
They told me they hadnt edited the site since I ordered and that I ordered one switch at £251.45

If as they claim that product hasnt been edited since I ordered, why now is it £256.00 per single unit, thats not what they charged me for one switch so they have made a mistake somewhere!

I got an email on the day I ordered and got an email with an order number. Didnt say what I ordered.

I took a screenshot of the order form though as I was amazed at the price.

I got another email four days later with a .pdf which shows 1 unit a couple of days before the switch arrived. Which I didnt query at the time, I guess I should have.

I got an email of Dell literally 5 minutes after my new laptop arrived showing a price drop of £200. Taking the P^&* or what!

this may be off topic but was it a managed or unmanaged switch you bought?

Its Managed.

with managed switches can you limit the speed on each port??

You can with most, I dont think this switch allows you to though, only between 100 and 10.

IIRC, under the distant selling act, you are entitled to return the item for a full refund regardless of what they say.

Thats why Dell credits you within the first three to four weeks for any prices drops.

I rang up and was told I couldnt have a refund because it was a business order...

Ive asked my credit card company to do a chargeback against the order

Use the distance selling act as mentioned above. They can't refuse. You have to send it back in the condition is was sent and within 7 days. If your going to untilise it get a move on.

do you mena set the speed of the port to 10 or 100 - most switches allow that

A managed switch usually menas one that runs SNMP

It sounds like you're requesting a switch that does RATE-LIMITING - try a cisco 3550


As regards the dell stuiff - if you have the screen print of what you ordered, even if its not what they confirmed - return it for a refund - they dont have a choice about it - you ordered A they delivered B

If you check the small-print on most orders they're not under any obligation to accept your order, and dont if they'll lose too much or the price changes before shipping, however similarly if its not what you ordered you're under no obligation to accept it
