Wildcard DNS question ...

Perhaps basic but unknown to me .... wildcard DNS - not domain specific.
Otay, here is my problem, and hence my question, ... I own hundreds of domain names. Is there not a setup such that any request to a name server that has no zone file to resolve to an IP????
Why can I not register a domain name with my name servers and not have it resolve without setting up zone files for each specific domain? Can there not be a default IP/directory that wildcards a request for a domain ( any domain set up with those name servers) ..... to "resolve" to an IP?
Is there a solution?
Thanks
Hal

In Windows Server 2003 setup a Default Website to Respond to 'All unassigned ips' on port 80. Now, any domain name that points to your server (and not actually hosted on your server) gets the default website.

Wildcard DNS is a bit different. Set up an A record for *domain.com. So now any domain name without a declared A record will go be caught by your wildcard.

On Linux? I have some 20,000 domains registered using my name servers .... but no zone files exist - so, naturally, I want to fix something so that they resolve to something instead of displaying "Unable to find site"???
Thanks
Hal

You would need script to do it then I presume. add whenever record is not found.

Agreed .... after the domain has resolved - no big deal there. But .... how to get Bind to resolve a domain not set up with a zone file to an IP to deal with it?
oneld/.com is registerd by me, pointed to my name servers but without a dns zone file to dictate what to do with it ..... can not ns.ldpro.com be configured so that it will direct a visitor to a "default" IP/directory as opposed to simply having the browser time out???
Thanks
Hal

I don't believe bind has this ability, although a programmer could easily either add it, or create a simple dns server that simply always responds with the same IP. It would not be trivial to do though.

just another thought ...

Someone speak to me with a solution .... "trivial"? perhaps. Perhaps a simple *.* zone file would suffice???? I just do not know.
By no means is any of this to be deemed as demeaning .... *ALL* responses/replies/ideas will_be/are much appreciated.
Mate, I agree .... it seems trivial and surely there is a simple solution - there *has* to be with so many parking services available - but what is it?
Besides my current dilemma, imagine all of the domains out there with lame delegation simply sitting .... just waiting on a DNS directive?
"Trivial"? If you can do it .... simply respond to hal@theccn.com with your thoughts
Hal

I have a brand new dedicated server sitting for a solution/tinkering .... I'm certainly game

Well, as I said, I'm fairly certain it's NOT possible with bind... so without hiring a programmer there is no simple solution.

Thanks
