Starting a Company

I decided, after knowing many people in the market, that I will start my own webhosting company. First off, I need a dedicated server to host my clients on it - and I need some spec suggestions.

Should I purchase a 2.4, 2.8, 3.2ghz server? Im currently looking into server matrix, and I dont want to spend TOO much until I start making a profit.

Got any suggestions.

Look at your business plan and work it out from that.

if you dont have many clients now, you can start with a reseller account, dont need to go with dedicated server yet

I would say the best thing you could do to begin is a Virtual Dedicated Server. You'd be having full control of your portion of the main box thus allowing you to custom tailor it how you want.

As I actually host them as well on FreeBSD I have somewhat of a working knowledge how that works. I'd be more then glad to explain it to you if you would like. Either email or private message me on the boards.

Regards,
Justin S.

Hi Justin,

Ooops - I misread the name of the orignal poster. The comments were intended for the original poster.

I do not represent GroupHosting.com but I can recommend them.

TacoX: The problem with VPS/VDS hosting is they require almost as much admin time as dedicated servers. A Private label Reseller account doesn't require patching and updates etc, so you may concentrate on supporting your clients.

Assuming you go with dedicated servers, then consider when starting out is having two smaller servers rather than larger capacity server, preferrably at different datacenters.

I don't know how many threads I have read where someone has all their sites on a single servers and experienced a catastrophic failure. Geographically isolated servers, with profile/backup from the other server would expedite recovery.

Also a large capacity firewire drive at home would be very handy for backing up your servers.

Hope this helps

not really. the price of a dedicated server is pretty low now. if he can get about 10 clients with price around 15-20 per month. it can pay itself off. you learn more about hosting if you got a dedicated server. go with a cheaper spec server and host about 10 or more clients and you can break even on the server.
