A newbie

Hi there,

Desperately looking for help to log on to SSH using WHM or CPanel. I wanted to install a software on the dedicated server but guess what I do not know how to log on to the command prompt using root

So far I have created a new account using the WHM, then using the CPanel from the new account have created a new directory and upload the installtion zip file. Extracted the files to its directory and now I have to run a file from that directory. Now comes the problem, I dont know how to run the script .

Read a bit about SSH login but each time I press SSH from CPanel the page disappears.

Please help me on this, would be absolutely greatful to you guys.

Cheers.

Nothing personal, but I don't think you should be administering a dedicated server if you don't even know how to log in via ssh. You should hire someone to look after your server to make sure it's always updated and secure. Those same people would install the program you want via ssh.

We all need to start somewhere ...

You need a SSH client to use SSH.

#1 Download & Install Putty : http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html

#2 Fill the connection information (server IP, server name, username & password)

#3 Connect : you'll get your command prompt.

Good Luck

I appreciate your answers guys, this is really good. I am quite good at UNIX (thats what I think) but had never used SSH console. Always connected using the good old telnet hence this confiusion.

Thanks a heaps atchoooo, this pretty much sorts out all my issues. I have just succesfully installed a shoutcast server and thanks should go to you. That was very helpful and right on the money.

jdhs, you are right about my lack of web server admin knowledge but am a software engineer albeit a different kind. I will consider your advise if i dont get eveything in place in a week's time.
