Question

up2date a redhat enterprise ES 3 box with plesk reloaded

Sorry for bothering this much and for being in some cases such repetitive, i am still new to some things on this extense world of linux and server management.

I am here today asking you all the advices you can give me to perform a flawless (or at least almost flawless) up2date on my box.

I have configured up2date to exclude spamassasin, but i am kinda afraid to perform it any way until i do have a concrete full list of what should i exclude from it, I have a RedHat Enterprise Linux ES 3 server with Plesk Reloaded 7.1.3 installed, i am aware about some suexec issues that i have to copy the suexec-psa over the suexec normal (backing it up first of course) but I know or at least my rookieness let me think that there are more things to be taken care of first.

Why do i want to perform the update, well basicly to update packages and security stuff so my box can be "a bit more secure" wich aid me on my business (as it does on you all).

I am asking your guidance on this, because there must be some one that really know how to do it and is able and nicely open to share the knowledge, as we all here are when others have other problems, all the help received here will be extra apreciated as long as it will maybe help other lot of people who have the same questions as me and want to do the same, and if there arent any, there will be.

best regards,

Hi, JLChafardet.

One thing I would suggest regardless of how you proceed is making sure you have RPM rollbacks enabled in your up2date configuration. This way if an update breaks something you'll be able to revert to your previous version.

You can enable rollbacks in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date with:
enableRollbacks=1

Exclamation great advice :)

thanks for the advice
changed 6. enableRollbacks No to 6. enableRollbacks Yes
now looks like this:

6. enableRollbacks Yes
8. pkgSkipList ['spamassassin*', 'sendmail*', 'squirrelmail*']
24. pkgsToInstallNotUp ['kernel', 'kernel-modules']

are the most notable things on my up2date --configure

still waiting for more advices

thanks for your repy,

best regards,
