Nocona 3.6G vs Opteron 250 - Database Test

finally, Intel has a 64-bit Xeon (Nocona 3.6G) can go head-to-head with Opteron on high-end database applications:
http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=2205
Nocona 3.6 pulls slightly ahead of OP250 on SQL read/write, and slight less on enterprise application (order-entry and stored procedure).

keep in mind that they are compared between:
2x $970 Nocana 3.6G with 4G DDR2-400 ECC reg ($1400) = $3340
2x $850 OP250 with 4G DDR-400 ECC reg. ($1000) = $2700

opteron is still about 25% better in term of performance/cost ratio.

Considering that the performance difference between the Opteron and Xeon on the SQL test were within the margin of error, I'd say more diverse testing is probably in order. However, I think this is good news for AMD, considering that they are comparing a 2.4 GHz Operton and a 3.6 GHz Xeon. If AMD jumps up the clock speed on their Opteron, they'll still be kicking the pants off Intel's Xeon line.

My single oppy 1.4 outperforms dual 2.4 xeons in 32bit tests so I don't think Intel is going to take anything from AMD 64bit or 32bit any time soon.

this is also a good comparison review for both of them:
