I am going to get a dedicated server for ftp hosting. What OS would anyone recommend? Also the distribution. Plus, what softwares? Thanks a lot.

Holy goodness... what type of MAJOR FTPing are you doing that you require a dedicated server?

What are you actually going to do with the server? If you're only doing FTPing, then boo hoo... get a linux box with nothing in it cept a Linux OS and you only have to set a few things and you're about all done and ready to go! LOL

But again, what the hell FTPing are you doing that you require a dedicated server to do it? LOL

Hope everything goes well for you tho... take care.

um..cant you be a little bit nicer to newbies to this forum. Anyway, cuz i got more than 30 gigs of files that need to be hosted via ftp. So was thinking if there is any must have software for a linux ftp server.

I'm sorry, wll6568... it was just seriously hillarious that you're getting a dedicated server just for that purpose. But anyways, there are LOADS of nice FTP programs out there, but as zeonite said, ProFTPD is a really nice program to use. It's quite stable too.

Also, can I know why in the world are you storing 30GB of data on the net somewhere? What type of files are they? Porn? MP3?

Anyways, hope you get a good provider.

If you need anything else, just PM and I'll reply soonest possible.

No, they are not porn. Well....may be like 1% are adult. hehe....They are video files. In the past, I have joined countless virtual hosting plans which provide space like 10G and bandwidth like 100G but they are just rubbish. They advertise as they really giving that much but in fact they delete your files without telling you and when i get known, they email you saying you got spam on your web which is nonsense. Thats why I need a dedicated server.

By the way, can anyone recommend the use of DirectAdmin for ftp hosting?

Er .. media industries such as the TV, advertising and film use FTP in a very big way. When you're transferring huge files such as approvals, pre-viz and other important documents then FTP is the way to go. SSLed FTP and SFTP are becoming very popular in that respect too.

FTP isn't just used for porn and MP3s these days

    For UNIX - vsftpd
    For Windows - Serv-U or WS_FTP Server

    Regards,

    Martyn

Are you the only person using the server? Will anyone else be using the server other than you?

What do you need a DirectAdmin for anyways?

Ps. Do check your PM... I left something for you there.

DirectAdmin is nice. Their new skin is neat
The most used is CPanel, but I think they're almost the same, in options.
I read, DA (DirectAdmin) is faster or something.

no question about it at all, if you want to run ftpd and host files. 100% use Linux and set up glftpd. if you have any problems with it and you want help ill be more than happy to set it up for you and show you how to use everything. I have been setting up glftpd religiously for about 5 years now, probably 200 of them

well they arent gonna install it you probably, you will havta isntall it yourself, and as far as managing it, you log into the ftp and you can do the commands right in there like with site commands. For example command like site adduser to add users. and this stuff.

I guess you can adminsitrate glftpd only remotly by SSH (using linux commands), or even raw commands when connected to the ftp - glftpd has a big user levers, so it's very possible to do that, but I really dunno.

if you just want simple and easy then just install windows and put like serv-u ftp on it. its the most basic and simple ftpd ever, but there aint a lot of options but it takes 15 seconds to setup

Hm.....well..welll..well, i cant afford windows machine. The one I am going to get is Celeron 2.4Ghz, 512MB RAM, 100MB port with a Direct Admin. I think Direct Admin would be fine ei? Can I use DA to set restriction to the ftp users i create, so that they wont be able to delete any files in the folder i give access to them?

Can someone tell me if a Celeron is good enough for a FTP server? Or an Athlon Xp 2200?

Yes. It's always about how usage you'll make of it. But I think so.

If they're the same price, go for the Athlon, but the Celeron will be quite sufficient for straight FTP. If you just need basic FTP support, vsftpd is small, light, and simple to set up. ProFTPD has a much richer feature set, though.

A Celeron should be suffice, however an Athlon XP 2200 would be more powerful and get the job done faster.

I would recomend getting a Linux Server with CPanel for what you want to do. I dont usually recomend CPanel because it has been known for security holes in it. But this setup would be perfect for a Webhost, With your ftp files it kinda sounds perfect for what you do.

your bottleneck is going to be network and disk i/o. celeron 2.4 will be more than you need under almost all circumstances.
