Depends on how the sending mail server is setup, most of them try for 72 hours to deliver then return a cannot send to server type message.

It'll keep trying for X amount of days, then it'll bounce back.

What about when the domain name is expired?
I had a friend who forgot the renew her domain name it took her about 7 days to get everything back to normal.

If it took that long then incoming email would simply be bounced back as being undeliverable unless they had a backup email server.

    Greetings:

"What about when the domain name is expired?"

That should result in a bounce back because the mail server will not be able to resolve the domain name.

    Thank you.
