I don't have any experience with SnapNames, but I always wondered what happens if you are not the only one who signed up with them for the particular name you're trying to get. I remember reading the info on their site a while back and I don't think they address this. You might be one of 10 people paying and waiting for one domain.
Anyway, I can do you one better on how long a name can be expired and not released. PrimeHost.com expired 16-May-2000 and is still not available. The registrant is listed as AOL Prime Host.

I have used Snapnames, still have 3 active accounts with them.
So far I have had a "hot/cold" kind of usage with them. For example, I wanted a domain that had expired on NetSol (a VeriSign company) and as SnapNames is a VeriSign company) where better to try, so I put down for the name and wait and wait and wait.. it wasn't until I went on to NetSol chat and asked about the name that suddenly 2 days later SnapNames got the name for me.. strange, but I don't care got the name :-)
Now as for how it works, we only one person can Snap a Name so to speak, so if you pay your $49 (soon to be $69 this month) then you are the only one that can Snap the name, anyone else can use the free "let me know what happens" feature but your the only one they will work for getting it for (as long as your account is in credit and you don't swap that snap name for another).
Another good thing of late is they done a deal with NameZero and what NameZero are in the middle of doing is handing over the names to SnapNames customers (for a small fee) for any names that customers of there's have asked for but not yet paid for.. so that's some 1.2 million names as I understand it.
Worth a try but don't spend to much money on it, and hey if you get one perfect name your laughing.

One other thing to keep in mind here though, is there are people other than SnapNames who are mining this dropped domain market. Just because you are the only one on SnapNames after a particular domain name name does NOT mean you will get it.
In the future, the WLS that VeriSign is proposing will change all this, but for now, you stand as little as a one in one hundred chance for a popular domain name.
Of course if you are Snapping for mydoghasfleas.com, you'll probably get it .

Who are the competitors of Snapnames? (URL plz)
A domain name that has expired is already on someone else's SnapNames list so I can't use SnapNames for it
If there are other companies offering this service then I am willing to use them and see if they can beat SnapNames

nope, you can change the same credit to watch another domain until it runs out.. the way they rig the system you need to have 3 or 4 credits on the go if you want to catch some good names, make sure and not pay for anyone that still has month to run before it comes up, total waste of money that... best bet are the ones past due or due that month.

Remember also that names don't necessarily drop within a reasonably time after they expire. I have customers waiting for domains that expired more than 18 months ago that are still being held up. You could have spent $100 trying to pick these up so far with no luck, even with no one else registering or renewing them!

I don't think this is exactly in the same catagory as the others. Minimum to get into this is $2,500 and it is a limited membership (10).
