Question

Buget dedicated server on east coast or in europe for a busy portal site?

I'm looking for a new dedicated server provider as my time with S4Y.com is almost up, I havent had any problems with S4Y.com, however I would like something closer to or in europe.

The server is mainly to host my busy portal site that gets over 1 million page views per month and to host an irc server and shoutcast.

Best I have found so far is amenworld.com

Min requierments.

200GB/month
40GB HDD
2Ghz CPU
100mbit connection (burstable)
Ping less than 100ms to UK
European host prefered
Price < $75

Don't buy on price for a busy site. It'll only lead to trouble down the line.

@pixel_fenix

Yes I know, you only get what you pay for, I've been with S4Y for 11 months and uptime has been fairly good, only time I was disapointed with them was the time they changed their nameservers without notifying me.

I can only afford a buget dedicated server, this is due to the amount of advertising we get.

Talked to sales staff at amenworld.com using the live chat applet on the site and to my surprise they were quite knowledgeable (there's something you dont see everyday from sales staff), they even provided me with an IP address to ping 62.193.224.3, response time here in the UK 45ms, compared to 120ms for my US server.

My Current Server in USA (S4Y.com)
---------------------------------------------
AMD Duron 1300
512MB DDR-RAM
60GB Hard Drive
700 GB Bandwidth
$49/month

European Server (amenworld.com)
--------------------------------------------
AMD Duron 1600 CPU
256 MB RAM
80 GB HDD
700 GB Monthly Traffic
£29/month

I'm now wondering which is the better spec for my busy PHP based portal site, more ram or faster cpu ?
also about 80% of my visitors are from Europe.

So which would you choose if you were me?

Maybe something @ poundhost.co.uk? One thing with amenworld is watch out for the hours of support. I think they are only 5 days a week or something

150GB/month is a bit low for me, my bandwidth peeked at 130GB, so I wouldnt feel comfitable with just a 20GB margin

I got another question, is 256MB enough for a busy portal, the site gets about 40 concurrent hits, and sometimes peeks at 300 when slashdot link a news article to us.

My current setup has duron 1300 and 512MB Ram, the entry level amenworld.com server has a faster cpu i.e. Duron 1800, but half the ram i.e. 256MB.

I might consider their mid range £39/month server if ram is an issue, http://www.amenworld.com/static/index_510.html

Here is everything my server host's

- The main portal site: bandwidth 40GB to 60GB/month, 1 million pageviews.
- A filesharing site (legally): bandwidth 4 to 6GB/month
- about 6 lightweight sites that use less than 1/2GB each
- a Shoutcast server: only used once or twice a week for a few hours, normally around 20 listeners, tho when there's a special event we broadcast this peeks at 100+
- an IRCd server: leaf server to a small irc network of 150 users max
- Quake 2 server: 10 players max
- plus all the usual services

@UltraUnixNET

The ping time to their domain address is 165ms, I assume this is hosted on their network. Also their dedicatated servers only have 10mbit connections and IRC is not allowed.
