Selling my domain. Need advice...
I no longer have the time nor dedication to work on my site and I'd like to just sell the domain. What's the best way to go about this? Sell it myself or use some kind of domain broker? My domain is calstudents.com. I'm also interested in knowing what's a reasonable asking price for it?
Thanks for your help.

You can use a service like www.afternic.com or www.urlbuyers.com to find out what a reasonable price would be. But don't expect too much.

...and ClicksForBiz.com incase they try to spell it out...
...anyway, back to the original thread post...I honestly don't think calstudents.com is worth too much...the total audience for the site is very narrowed already just by the name. But, good luck.

Calstudents.com - could be applied to all students in all grades in the state of California. Not a small market at all...

Ok, you may be right. Damage may want to keep an eye on CaliforniaStudents.com. It expired yesterday and there is no site up for it. Good luck.

TheWitt, TexStudents.com is available if you're interested...also not a small market at all, I suppose.

In spite of the fact that there are fewer and fewer .com domain names available, the marketability of domain names has diminished significantly over the past year. You see thousands of domains for sale, but the reality is very few are bringing their asking price, particularly at the upper end. Many have found that a name by itself is of much less value than they anticipated. Obviously, there are examples that would contradict this such as business.com...leading search words.
This is not all that different from the history of branding and logos off-line. Domain names are a form of branding...and the reality is that they are what you make them through marketing. Take some of the most successful brands...like Coca-Cola, IBM, General Motors, General Electric. Is there really anything special about the name. The answer is no...the brand has been built and by any other name would have as well.
On line, much of the same. Did the name, Amazon.com, have any intrinsic value. Only short and easy to remember. It certainly didn't even hint as a great place to buy books. And Yahoo.com. Same story. In fact, if I didn't know what it is I would have been somewhat turned off by the name.
This said, a name like calstudents.com has little intrinsic value. Now if it came with traffic of 200,000 visitors per day...that would be much different.
I guess the key to domain names today is easy to remember, easy to type and spell correctly, not easily confused, and an added value if available would be to be descriptive of the business.
At this point, most of the good, one-word .coms are gone. However, with most of my clients, I have had no problem finding good two word names or even short three words. And some one words are surprisingly available. For instance, I recently found clockery.com for a client who also purchase cuckoosforless.com...also, an easy to remember and not too long. Recently, I found a name closely tied to some of my branding which I wanted...good, short, descriptive, but really of more value to me than anyone else. Namezero was holding it and wanted $200. They came down to $150...then $100...well, I purchased it for $50 plus reimbursement of two year registration.

yes i agree 100% i think the main key to the value is what you said at beginning of your post, "...leading search words" whats the first result of a search going to be when you type business into the text box and hit enter,,,,probly www.business.com.
makes alot more sense now.

Well....
If any of you are interested or know anyone that would be interested in the domain, please let me know. I rather have a private sell than go through a third party if I have to. Thanks for all the help and feedback too.
