    * 600 lb lady dies after being surgically removed from couch

    http://www.wftv.com/news/3643877/detail.html

Is ths not the most disgusting/sad thing you've ever heard?

STUART, Fla. -- A dramatic rescue ended tragically in Stuart, Florida, a rescue so difficult firefighters say they have never seen anything like it.

It happened late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning at the home of a 600-pound woman who was having trouble breathing. Rescuers went in not knowing how difficult it would be to get her out. 40-year-old Gail Grinds was literally stuck to her couch and had to be removed surgically at the hospital.

Authorities estimate she had been on the couch anywhere from two to five years.

Martin County Fire amd Rescue crews faced what seemed to be an impossible mission. Everyone going inside had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air.

They tried to cut out the front door, but at four-and-a-half feet wide, it wouldn't work. They had to cut plywood since a normal stretcher wouldn't do.

An ambulance was too small, so they brought in a trailer to get her out. While rescue crews came up with a back-door rescue plan, detectives secured what had become a crime scene, questioning family members about how it got so bad.

Using planks, they loaded the woman on to the trailer, still attached to the couch. Removing her would be too painful, since her body is grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin has literally become one with the sofa and it must be surgically removed.

Detectives are investigating whether they have a case of neglect, or if it is simply a very sad story.

Grinds was taken to the Martin Memorial hospital where doctors removed her from the couch, but she died in spite of all the attempts to save her life.

That's just sick! I have a really hard time understanding how this could happen...

Very sad. If she didn't move for 2-5 years from that couch someone must have been bringing her food for her to get that large so it does sound like her "loved" ones were negligent!

To become that large she'd have to eat, that means she'd have to get up to get the food. Even if she had someone else do it, that someone would have to have known how bad it is and would have reported it to the proper authorities.

    We're missing something here...

I remember an episode of Third Watch where this happened. Unfortunatly there are alot of disturbed people out there who can cause this to happen to someone else. (Not that I know if it was her choice or not.)

They should of tackled the problem when it first started. 2 to 5 years? Jeez people do not care for each other that much. That poor lady hakes head: though it is part her fault as well not only the family. She could of done something in the first part, and this would not of happen.

The article is surprisingly badly written for a news item, and there is little detail at all - not even the woman's name or age, which usually is usually provided in such items, as is a source - ie, AP.

Overall, it actually reads like a ten-year old made it up.

Yeah, this story sort of screams BS to me too.

But this looks to actually be by a Florida local TV news affiliate of IBS TV, whoever they are.. and if you goto their site... there is actually a picture so this one may be legit.

I don't understand how this woman could poo if her skin was fused to the couch. I would assume she sat on her butt... And if your butt is fused to the couch, that wouldn't leave any space for the poo to come out.

It's not "sick" or "disgusting". However, it is very sad.

I don't have all the details, but going by what I know.....

Chances are the woman suffered from some type of mental illness, ranging from depression and anxiety, all the way to OCD, that kept her from leaving the house (or even moving), and then complicated by an eating disorder. She might not have been able to bring herself to do anything about it. Her relatives may or may not play a role. Sometimes people with these conditions push away those who are trying to help, because they are embarrassed and overwhelmed by their own illness.

NOTE: Mental illness (be it clinical depression, OCD, etc.) does not mean crazy or loony. Unfortunately that stigma is attached to it by many people, thus contributing to those who are suffering, and making them even more afraid, embarrassed or unwilling to ask for (or accept) help.

I've seen people lose the use of their legs, arms and other body parts, strictly because a certain fear kept them from doing things that most people take for granted. They stay in bed for months, even years. OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is a particularly bad condition. For some, it's little things like turning on and off the light switch 20 times before accepting that it's really off. For other's it is much more serious, like being so afraid of germs that they cut off all human contact. Most of the time, these people are quite intelligent, and otherwise very 'normal'. The illness just effects the way they think and perceive things. They often suffer alone, because they don't want people to know, in fear of being called crazy. They are not crazy. In many cases it is a simple imbalance of chemicals in the brain, that can be greatly improved by a little pill (such as 'paxil' for example). The problem is getting these people help before the disorder completely takes over their life, and goes from a simple mental illness to something that effects their physical health too.

Again, I don't know the details of her case, so this may or may not apply. I've seen this before though.

Very sad. God bless her soul.

(and yes, I do have some first hand experience in such matters)

It is sad though...how someone can get that far where they actually become "one" with a couch.
